Green mulch suggestions?

I'm looking for suggestions for groundcovers that I can try out that are not problem children, to grow along with herbacious perennials.

I don't mind if they spread aggressively so long as they are easy to remove and don't choke out other plants. That means that pachysandra, ivy, sororia violets, creeping thyme and periwinkle are RIGHT OUT.

I've had good results with sweet woodruff and dwarf roman chamomile, but I can't do a whole garden in it. I've just planted brass buttons and ornamental strawberry to check out. Does anyone have any critters that they could recommend?
