Hi,

I have so many watermelons starting, in previous years they have succumbed to bugs or something gnawing in from the bottom. So this year I mulched heavily with straw and propped with watermelons off the ground on plastic pots. Any other tricks out there? Harriet

"Cuffs" around the stems of a 1/2 toilet paper roll or a piece of soda bottle/water bottle.

I am having good luck (fingers crossed) this year with all squash, melon etc. I see some moths which lay and eat plants (canna rollers late this year) so I'm dubious how long it stays that way, but I'm hopeful!

Could you expand on this idea? What bugs does this protect against?

We are battling squash bugs here. Ready to try just about anything at this point.

Do you mean to put the cuff on the stem as it emerges from the ground, or where the fruit is growing from?
