I believe you can do tomatos now from cuttings. I just fond a few this past weekend in Athens and planted So I hope this is true. Squirrels got my first planting. So now I have made a pepper spray to deter them. Best luck.

i would go to the store and buy some directly from there. it's probably too late to start from seed at this point. many of the plants you'll find at the stores are already 6-8 weeks old, so there isn't a problem there, they'll be just about at production stage OR already have fruit on them.

realistically, for indeterminate tomatoes (grow and fruit till they freeze to death), mine usually grow and fruit until late december/early january. so, keep that in mind. if you buy determinate, you may not get so much out of them.

my cukes usually die back in november. i reckon squash should be close to the same. again - buy some plants that are already flowering.

you could possibly get by doing beans and peas.

you could also put some arugula in the ground, along with other greens, but it is probably too early still to do cold-season crops like kale, late-fall starting of spinach, etc.

the key for me to growing at this time of summer is to water daily for the first couple of weeks and mulch the bases like hell to keep that water in. dry summer heat seems to be a plant's worst enemy.

i am walking proof that starting veggies now is possible. i just started swiss chard, mustard greens and some lettuce this week, and i'm about 5-6 days into sprouting in full sun. just gotta keep that ground moist, and these recent mild days have been a huge help. if it rains every day this week as is forecasted (60% or better every day until mid next week), should be good to go.

Excellent to hear. I truly felt bad as we got his garden in, and as it started to take off...they sold their house (garden included).
