True pinks, part 2

17 years ago

This is actually a response to the thread which gardenfanatic started, but it was already very long. I have pictures of some that I consider "true" pinks. Soil, heat, and water (or lack of ) can sometimes change color on certain cultivar. I have noticed particularly on some of the Spacecoast cultivars, that the pinks turn really peachy or "melony" in times of drought. I don't care much for peaches or melons.

First, here are some good older pinks. One is Oliver Billingslea's SOUTH SEA ENCHANTMENT. It is a lovely shade of pink:

John Shooter's HELEN SHOOTER is an open formed light pink:

The oldie TRUE PINK BEAUTY ( by Copenhaver, I think) had a polymerous bloom a couple of weeks ago. This has huge flat blooms - no question they're pink.

BARBARA MITCHELL is light but always appears a pale pink. I've grown it for years and can't remember it looking peachy.

Some newer ones - well, someone mentioned PRINCESS DIANA.Sorry, but that has been a bit of a disappointment here. Flowers bloom too low in the foliage, and it often looks washed out. This is about the best bloom on it I've seen ( and this is after 3 years.)Taken a few days ago:

SHORES OF TIME is about as pink as it gets:

As is CHARTERED COURSE:

a pretty pale pink ( but it probably doesn't look much like Ted Petit's picture) is APRIL LA QUINTA. It is big, pale pink and beautifully substanced.

A brand new one of Margo Reed's just had first bloom yesterday. It is a heavenly shade of pink and I love it. This is ONCE UPON A TIME:

And WEBSTER'S PINK WONDER, well I've seen it stop people in their tracks time after time. These blooms are just huge:

However, my very favorite pinks have to be those bright neon pink ones - such as FLAMINGO FLAMBEAU:

{{gwi:867052}}

or Jamie Gossard's NEON FLAMINGO:

{{gwi:867053}}

Or a new one from Judy Davisson which just bloomed here last week, NO BOYS ALLOWED:

There are lots of great pinks, you just have to find them!

    Those are all truly lovely! Do you happen to know the ph of your soil? Just wondering if that makes the difference as I live in the same VA climate. All my pinks are peach, even my Shores of Time. I got it on the LA from someone who bought theirs directly from the Stamile's so it's not a tissue-cultured one.

    Love those pinks! Where did you get FLAMINGO FLAMBEAU & NO BOYS ALLOWED? I have never seen these two before. Shores of Time looks really pink. That is one that is going on my list as well.

    Julie - Once Upon A Time and Flamingo Flambeau are spectacular! Thanks for posting these photos.

    Sue - If Shores of Time is peachy, then your soil has big problems. Have you tested it?

    Sue, I have red VA clay here. Over the years, I have had truckloads - at least 20 TONS of topsoil ( as my back can attest to!) hauled in for raised beds. I think my plants might be peachy too if I tried to grow in the clay soil we have. The place I get topsoil from mixes 2/3 topsoil and 1/3 soil conditioner. ( mostly old mulches - pine bark, cypress, hardwood, etc. all mixed together) Otherwise, the topsoil is too heavy. I also freely mix compost in when planting. The last time I tested my soil, it was about right for daylilies. Right off the bat, I'm thinking around 6.8 -6.9 but that might not be right.

    Dianne, I mostly get plants directly from their hybridizers. Both FLAMINGO FLAMBEAU ( Linda Michaels 08) and NO BOYS ALLOWED ( Judy Davisson 06) came from the hybridizers. Linda is in NY. She sometimes sells on the Lily Auction. Judy is in - well, oops, either SC or NC. Judy sells on the Lily Auction also. Hope this helps!

    I planted my Shores of Time in 75% good topsoil I bought mixed with native soil that's not red clay, just native topsoil. I haven't tested it, but its on the acid side as the hydrangea nearby is blue. I just thought it would be interesting to know the OP's soil ph.

    oops - missed the post where floota says hers is around 6.8. I'll get the soil tested!
