Currants have a real problem in hot weather. I grew up growing black currants in my own garden, red in a neighbors. We had lovely jellies.
I wish to grow them to. I miss that sweet tart flavor.

ggg's right. The heat & humidity of The South is a problem for currants & gooseberries. Even here in z6, they like a semi-shady spot.
I've never seen any currants recommended for trial in zones 7/8, but Pixwell and Glenndale gooseberries *might* work there, if provided some respite from full sun. They're not great 'dessert' type gooseberries, but if you crave 'em, and they'll work for you, they're still better than canned.
