Do Birds Sleep with Their Eyes Open?

I know it's a dumb question, but I came almost nose to nose with a bird sitting on a branch while I was cutting back a sucker and the bird didn't move at all. I thought it was playing possum, but I wandered off to do other chores. When I came back to take another look it was in the same position and still not moving. I brushed its branch when I was backing up, and it squawked and flew off. Was it asleep?
