too late to plant a Vitex?

A friend just gave me a lovely little Vitex (Chaste Tree) as a memorial to our wonderful dog we just lost.

Is it too late, and too hot to plant it now? Should I just try to keep it in a pot until fall or do you think it would be okay planted in my landscape? It's still pretty small, about 3 feet tall.
