Kinnikinnick does not take real well transplanted from established plantings. I'd suggest you try smaller, container grown plants available at garden centers for better succcess. And fall is a great time.

If the Arctostaphylos is a large planting, stems root and you should be able to dig out some rooted stem.

Small container grown plants are the way to go. Established Kinnikinnick is harder to transplant than it first appears. You have a lot of dieback and it's slow to fill in. Weeds are a problem in the meantime. Timely application of a mulch of the proper thickness is a problem also.
I've done both, and planting small container grown plants is the way to go.
