Sounds like a gold mine! Even if it is too ratty looking to use as top dressing, I use old mulch and chopped leaves in several ways: 1) throw a handful in when planting something (attracts beneficial worms), 2) put down as a base layer of mulch and top dress with fresh, 3) mix with greens (i.e., grass clippings) to create a compost pile (needs a mixture of green and brown).

If you can bag that stuff up in contractors bags (they are thick), add a bit of water if it's dry, poke a few holes in the bags for air and stack them up in a back corner, you can use them when you wish as Esh suggests. I agree, GOLDMINE of great natural soil ammendments. If you want to make more islands or create some lagasana beds, you basically have free material. If you bag up the stuff, it will continue to compost and turn fluffy and full of worms!

I concur, goldmine. At the very least you can use it as a covering over plantings and put new pine straw on top to look nice. A thick layer like that will protect your soil and keep weeds from germinating.

I've planted about 30 pines on a hill in my yard and can't wait for the day when they can cover the hill with their own pine straw.

Thank you for letting me know didn't have a bunch of trash. I will keep some of it to use in my beds but because we would like most of the area in our yard to be grass (for the kids to play on) I know I have way too much.
dredawg I live in the Lilburn area. I have started bagging the smallest mound. I filled four bags and it barely made a dent. I do have one concern though there are mushrooms growing out of some of the mounds. Is this ok? I am from AZ so don't really know about hot and humid.
