old pine straw mounds

My husband and I jut bought our first home and are really excited about fixing up the yard. The prior owners left MANY LARGE mounds of pine straw, sticks, leaves, and pine cones. I think for the past 5 years they just kept raking the lawn debris to the edge of the yard. Anyway I have started bagging it up to get rid of it. It is old and decomposing. My question is should I save some? I know that pine staw is used as mulch but I dont know if what I have is any good. Please advise is my yard a gold mine of mulch or a money pit of trash?

Thanks
