It's been a long time but I seem to remember leafy crops and root crops do well in the fall. Consider mustard greens, spinach, turnips lettuce, cabbage, also radish, carrots, broccoli, brussel sprouts, onions. For just a cover crop to enrich the soil my favorite is crimson clover purchased from a feed and seed store. In the spring don't try to till it in as a green manure without mowing it first to keep it from wrapping around the tines. It has beautiful flowers in the spring that bees love. I am not sure about planting times but check the back of the seed packets and ask at the feed & seed store.

I bought mustard greens, beets, kale, turnips and spinach seeds today. I wanted leek sets but didnt see any. I might start some seeds this week and every week for the next month, but not put any into the ground yet. I usually start them indoors rather than direct sowing bc i have such a bug problem. BTW most stores will get fall veggies in a month.

i know you start peas and garlic too. around the end of august if you start them in the ground.

Don't forget collards! I've used them as a winter backdrop to pansies with great success. I've found kohlrabi rewarding, but not terribly exciting to eat or view. Spinach, mustard, chard, carrots, fennel, and lettuce (simpson and paris island, dead after heavy frost) have performed admirably when direct seeded in late August.

My leeks were a sad joke. I've seen bonsai grow more rapidly. Two years after seeding them, they were barely large enough to harvest. Friends accused me of planting plastic plants...

Broccoli, cabbage, and brussel sprouts have been pretty direct donations to the compost heap.

Winter veggie gardening is wonderful if you don't like eating fresh greens that have first been sampled by bugs!

Celery also gets planted now. It grows through the winter.

If you're lucky enough to live in a county with a good extension agent, they'll help you too. At the very least, they'll have copies of the publications from the website in case you don't want to print out a lot of stuff.
