Need motivation (warning whining)

Is anyone else having a hard time getting motivate to do anything. August is always so hard for me to even go out in the yard. I am either too hot, or I am getting eaten alive or both. Meanwhile I know I need to go tame the weeds and all that stuff, but I just can not get myself to go put on the jeans and long sleeves to go attack them. So then I can't even go out in the yard since I am too plagued with guilt for not tackling the weeds, so I do nothing. I have a bed I started this spring that I still haven't finished ammending. I think if we just got a good rain I might feel inspired by it to do something. My yard is so dry. I have lost several shrubs I planted this spring. Maybe Ernesto might bring us some rain you think? I am trying to think what I might bring for the fall trade and I can't even think about digging anything up in this heat. Okay I'm done whining for now.

Let's review your points one by one:

Is anyone else having a hard time getting motivate to do anything. August is always so hard for me to even go out in the yard. True for me

I am either too hot, or I am getting eaten alive or both. True for me

Meanwhile I know I need to go tame the weeds and all that stuff, but I just can not get myself to go put on the jeans and long sleeves to go attack them. True for me One thing you can do is to go out with scissors and a grocery sack; just cut off the flowers/seed heads - most of them are annuals. For ground hugging plants, cut the stem where it comes out of the ground.

So then I can't even go out in the yard since I am too plagued with guilt for not tackling the weeds, so I do nothing. True for me

I have a bed I started this spring that I still haven't finished ammending. This is one thing I did this year - finished a bed that was needing attention.

I think if we just got a good rain I might feel inspired by it to do something. My yard is so dry. I have lost several shrubs I planted this spring. True for me, I lost a couple of wee ones too. Too little root mass with not enough time being established. And they were in an out of the way location.

You see, you are not so different! Hang in there girl, fall is coming!!

Thanks for sharing with us Kathy. And thanks to you, Esh, for giving validation to all Kathy's "whining". LOL I'm so glad to know I'm not alone. For that I sincerely thank you both.

Guilt factor here is increased by across the street (very nice)neighbor who has been working her butt off digging, planting, hauling load after load of rock she's been getting from a roadside nearby and building stacked walls in her backyard stream. I'm really glad I don't have whatever it is that drives her to all this. It's too darn hot, plain and simple.

    My 2 cents worth,

You might be surprised at the perspective of others. Right now, my garden is 50/50 weeds and flowers, but when others look at it, they say Ohhh, how pretty, because they see GREEN and blooms. Fifty percent of the mass is weeds! If my husband keeps the grass cut and I edge, it doesn't appear to be the weed patch that it really is.
By the way, I found a lightweight, rechargeable edger that I can use and it makes weeding a lot easier. Between occasional Round-up and occasional weed-eating, things don't look so bad. Anything that I do in the garden is quick and in the early morning on a cool day or after a rain. We do the best we can! Soon, we sill be cool enough to cut it all down to start over again in the spring.

i'm with you all the way Kathy! I have started to go out early in the morning for about an hour ( this is around 7.30 a.m!!) but this year just find it too hot/humid to do much else. Everything is a chore at the moment. I am sooooooooo looking forward to the coler weather.

Oh, Kathy. I tried to psyche myself up. I decided that anyone can do anything for 15 minutes a day, so I went trotting out yesterday morning to garden for 15 minutes. The problem is I get distracted and spend a lot of time staring at the yard when I garden. Sure enough I got distracted staring at the chaste tree and trying to decide why it doesn't look right and whether I should prune the clematis now and wondering what kind of clematis it is and whether I should break down and get a digital camera and take a picture and post it on the clematis forum so someone can ID the clematis - and my 15 minutes were up. I'll let you know if I come up with a better plan.

I'm not feeling overy motivated either. I do go out and weed any cooler evening we get, which is of course, few and far between...I cut flowers, I collect my seeds. That's about it. Most of my veggies are done and are just an overgrown mess (so I need to get motivated to tear them out).
I've got plans to do some projects in the fall, but so far, that's about it!

Lately we've been having a lot of what we call "Florida weather" down here in coastal Georgia-with intermittent rains and then the lovely, energy sapping humidity! Sigh. My plants are loving it, unfortunately, so are the weeds.

LOL to all. The heat is such that I am trying to behave myself because if hell is any hotter, I do not want to go there.
In lieu of doing anything that involved bending or pulling, I walked around with a sheet of notepaper on a clipboard and wrote down everything I need to do when it turns cooler. Filled up one side and 1/2 other. Was so discouraged I threw the darn list in the trash.

This heat is awful. Simply unbearable to be outside.
I don't know how anyone lives in Texas where it's even hotter and drier.
It is 91 degrees again right now. This is the warmest summer I ever remember going through here.

The 15 day forcast on accuweather showed that there wasn't going to be anymore 90's and towards early sept the lows dipped to 59 on a couple of nights. Those 15 day forecasts are never right though. I noticed they changed it and now there is no more 50's and a lot more high 80's.

Well, I admit I've felt guilty about not getting out there to do work, but not too guilty. It is just too darn hot, as everyone has already mentioned. I figure I'll get out there eventually, and thankfully, most of my neighbors are staying in, too. So, all of our yards are pretty bad.

About the shrubs in my yard that have died: I just tell myself I never liked that Rhododendron anyway!

I'm having the same problem getting myself out the door to do anything by this time of the year. I didn't water the lawn or shrubs at all the past week. Shame on me! I think the rain we've had may have been enough. I'm also getting tired of wearing summer clothes, fighting with ants, sweating and using the a/c.
I'm looking forward to fall, opening the windows, and feeling chilly enough for a sweater.
I've learned by past mistakes that planting too much means a lot of watering and care all summer. Now I have only a few drought resistant shrubs, and a half a dozen heat/drought tolerant flowers.
I do get tempted to buy a lot of plants in the Spring, but I have to control myself and remember how much easier it is if I only have a few.
Cheer up cooler days are coming!

Yeah it rained and is supposed to be cooler tomorrow, maybe I will get out in the yard finally!

Thought I was alone, too. Then I stepped back (into the cool house) and rationalized (which I'm really, really good at.)

Fact #1: this was one of the hottest, most humid summers on record. Fact #2: almost everyone's yard looked like hell this summer. Fact #3: There's always next year!

Thinking thus-ly may help free ya'll from the nasty guilt trip that plagues every ernest gardener. Worked for me!:>)
