Seed recommendations for a 2nd-grader?

Hello, Georgia people!

I once lived in Georgia, myself--Decatur. However, I was renting, and didn't garden very much. My best friend's child loves growing things, (they still live in Atlanta) and was in charge of the tomato plants this year.

He is really interested in growing from seed, and I think that's really neat. I have some ideas for seeds I could give him, either because they're fun for kids, easy, tasty, or because I think they'll do well in Atlanta. I'd love your input on whether some of my ideas are bad for that area, or if you have other suggestions. He will probably be growing in pots on their deck, which must be pretty sunny since they grew the tomatoes there.

Here are my seed ideas:

beans, like Scarlet Runner

cotton, if I can get more seed (I grew it up here!)

sunflowers -- short ones, maybe

cannas

garlic chives

mild peppers

tomatoes

basil

lantana

malva sylvestris--blooms quickly, but I'm not sure how well it grows in Atlanta.

Gaillardia -- I think they're really heat-tolerant?

I have a long seed list, so if anyone feels up to reading it and naming something from that list that is better than something listed above, that would be great--but even without that, any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
