You can often find dwarf cultivars of plants now, just put in the scientific name in google and add the word "dwarf".

Newly planted shrubs will of course need adequate water the first year and mulch to help retain the moisture. Here are some suggestions:

Fothergilla, Clethra alnifolia, Morella cerifera (several dwarf forms), Ilex vomitoria (Yaupon holly), Viburnums, Aesculus pavia (red buckeye, can be considered a small tree), Chionanthus virginicus (can be considered a small tree), Ilex glabra.

I'll try to think of some others.

I'm going to plant some rabbiteye blueberries in full sun (they are evergreen, I believe). I also have sambucus, physocarpus, itea virginica, and ceanothus in full sun.

Is Caryopteris native? I don't know, but it does well in full sun.

Although non-native, I've had a lot of luck with various Abelias in full sun, for something evergreen and flowering.

Thanks for the suggestions! I did already put a red buckeye in, and I will use some of these ideas for plants to fill in around our small, sunny yard. I have some blueberries in part sun now, but maybe I'll move them here.

Witch hazel and Sweetshrub (Calycanthus floridus) might also be suitable although the sweetshrub might like to be on the edge if there is any shade to be had. Agarista populifolia is another one; there is commonly available dwarf called 'Leprechaun'.

I'm taking notes, having lots of hot soil, so thanks for posting. At the Hall County Master Gardeners Fall Expo I asked the lovely people from Carolina Wild (.com), for plants that would feed birds on a hot unwatered southern slope and came away with starts for nice clumps of Coralberry (Symphoricarpos orbiculatus) and Red Chokeberry (Aronia arbutifolia). I know they'd be happy to discuss plants for your situation.
