I would suggest senna corymbosa as a small tree. Also consider some shrubs as just small trees. I don't think a small trees roots will penetrate a foundation as roots tend to follow moisture and if you have an overhang with gutters the area next to the house should be dry. That would cause the roots to just stop in their tracks.

Sounds pretty, but also need to consider how to avoid having branches rubbing against your home when winds come up.

First off, do you know what kind of Loropetalum you have? Some of them get quite large, rather quickly. When I purchased my new house, I tore out the loros that had been planted along the facade and gave them to my mom. Good thing I did! A year later, they're about four feet tall and wide, and look to get bigger. I don't know what the landscaper hired by the developer was thinking when he put those plants there.
Once you're sure that yours aren't going to take up all the room in your bed, you might consider a small crape myrtle or dwarf-intermediate conifer. Either will provide structure and year-round interest - with leaves or without.

A tree seeded itself 7 feet from my home in the neighbours fenceline. The branches extended over our roof line, and last year when the branches were close/or touching the house we had terrible problems with squirrels and roof rats. Now the tree is taller, they can't jump that far.
Luckily, the tree is also now dead and needs to be cut down (evil grin). I think the idea of limbing up a shrub is a great idea.
