I live just north of ATL and I threw some ajuga under a tree in our backyard. Our friend pulled her overgrown ajuga and gave us some. Ours gets sun and shade, but it's in really dry cracked soil in the summer. It flourished! I did water it in the first two months (spring) but it has tripled in size with no further attention. Watch it, it seems to spread like wildfire. I needed it to do that, to cover up the dirt circles under our trees.

Ajuga grows nicely under an Elm tree in our back yard (dappled sun), and in a shade garden. It came from we know not where. A small amount showed up under our tree one year and it took off. We have never done anything for it, no watering, and it has survived. In drought, it dies back, but has never failed to come back on the rare occasion that it rains, or the next spring. We have had it for over twenty years. Ours has spread some, but not too badly because it does not seem to like full sun.

They spread ALOT!!! i love the flowers in the spring. i've seen them grown in pots & they trail nicely. they suffer in Atl summer sun!

Vnginger, what varieties do you grow? I'd like to get some Ajuga 'Party Colors.' This source says it performs well in hot weather.
