Making dried gourds into plain birdhouses

I grew about 20 gourds..I don't know which type but they are about 10" tall and 6" at their widest..

I simply wanted to cut a hole in each one to fabricate the beginnings of a bird nest for some of the birds this coming spring...

They are now dry and I'm ready to cut, but how big and just one hole for the bird's front door and another at the neck to thread string through to tie them to a tree...I'd rather nail them to trees..seems birds..would rather something more stable? Which bird breeds or lives in them? Should I use some sort of preservative on the outside part to stop them from rotting...or plan on replanting each year..

Is all this possible or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Thanks for your help gardeners...you always have the answers!.
