Generally the kinds of fern grown in hanging baskets can't survive outdoor temperatures. I have put some in the crawl space before and taken them out in April and watered and fertilized them and slowly they came back. It would have worked out better for me to just have thrown them away and bought new ones in the Spring.

Boston Fern won't survive temps. under 40 degrees (according to W. Reeves) so won't make it through winter in Atlanta area. I have several very large ones and winter them under our house where the temperature stays at least 55 degrees. Also they need light so we added some grow lights to help them survive. I cut them back by half before storing for winter and water about every 10-15 days. In March I start fertilizing and watering more frequently to get them ready to move outdoors.

I love Boston Ferns and the ones I have would be expensive to replace. The extra work getting them through winter and the grow lights were worth the investment for me.
