the best way to compost is to let someone else do it for you!a lot of the local cities around compost their leaves they get off the curbside in the fall.gainesville has several year old composted leaves you can get by the truckload.already composted!ready to put out.i usually get about 10 loads a year-and it's free.

An easy way? just pile it up and wait for it to rot. From there we can go on to get slightly more technical: use large brush or a wooden pallet on the bottom to provide more aeration, place the compost pile in a spot where you plan to plant something in the future as the pile will leach nutrients into the ground and attract earthworms, start adding organic material but do not pile grass clippings too thick without mixing with leaves, pine straw or other like matter, throw on a couple of shovels full of dirt on top to innoculate the pile then drag out the hose and water. you can occasionally add a little fertilizer to the pile to provide nitrogen and speed up the process but do not add lime yet as the composting process works best in a moist, acidic environment. Collect leaves from the neighborhood and stockpile them for adding to the pile in stages. You might open these bagged leaves and add water, fertilizer and soil then reclose them. They will begin to break down in the bags. Add food scraps but no meat or grease. Cover these scraps with leaves or pine straw. The last step is to take a pitchfork every two months and completely turn the pile top to bottom. In the Spring rake away the brush and stuff that hasn't broken down yet and shovel the remainder into a wheelbarrow for spreading around your ornamentals. Repeat the process.
