Transplanting peonies

I have several peonies to be transplanted. I ordered them from a reputable mail order source, but due to work circumstances, have not had time to plant them. Is it too late to put them in their permanent home? Or would it be acceptable to plant them in pots and keep them in an unheated garage over the winter? (The garage has two windows, if that makes a difference.) What is the best thing to do?

First, let me say I'm not an expert on peonies, but I plan to plant some this weekend. They're bare-root (packed in peat moss) from a local garden center. They're sold with the fall bulbs and this is still a good time to plant them. (I'm in the new 8a region around Atlanta.)

I just read a "Winter Prep" article, and one of the things it said you can safely transplant now are peonies.

I just planted some daylilies. I'm thankful that I got them in before the rain came. Good luck with your new plants!
