Quirky, I've had best results choosing mine at the nursery in the Fall...sometimes that method might be off a little after you plant in different soil, sun/shade conditions, etc., but it's a pretty good indicator. josh

Also, check Wayside Gardens catalog, they give good info on the various types of Japanese Maples. Even if you don't buy it there.

My palmatum Tamukeyama came from wayside as a little baby, and now 5 years later is filled out, but still not at full size. He is, as the catalog says, crimson in spring, purple in summer and scarlet in fall. Put on quite a show this year.

I had him in the front for 2 years, but he didn't like the full sun. I moved him to the back under a deck where he gets dappled afternoon sun and he took off.
