Taro root for elephant ears type plants (I've heard it is better to get them in smaller stores as the large grocery stores have roots that have been treated to prevent sprouting).

I have been tempted to sprout some pecans in the shell. I know that raw peanuts sprout because the squirrels planted a bunch for me. Now I only feed them the roasted variety!

And by accident I have discovered that any piece of potato thrown out turns into a potato plant!

As a kid in Virginia, we liked to sprout the avocado seed and a couple times we rooted the top of a pineapple. Neither type of plant lived to maturity, though. And what kid didn't sprout beans for class projects? They always had such a great germination rate.

esh, there is a pecan tree in our back yard that came from one that a squirrel buried in the front yard. I moved the seedling and it lived. It produces pecans but they aren't any good.

I've planted various types of taro, ginger, always just plant garlic, organic potatoes, lemonbalm, an avocado pit that lasted the summer but made my DH happy, and we had a lemon tree in our yard that lasted 11 years and was planted from a grocery store seed apparently (died a few years after we moved in).

While my cousin visited Italy, she squeezed some lemonade out of some very LARGE lemons, brought the seeds home and planted them. They are up. Curious to see how long it will take for it to fruit and if the lemons will be as large.

Ginger grew well one year, not the next. Garlic, onions, and shallots. Potatoes and beans, of course. Wheat from wheat straw (from the garden store, not the grocery store).

The lemons are surprising. I've always been told that fruit are so highly cultivated that seeds rarely produce desirable fruit.
