Monday's blooms

Every time I think we're past peak it seems to pick up again. I was out there in the garden a long time this morning. It will be tapering off all too soon. I hope you enjoy todays pic....I hope to post some more seedlings today too.

Nice blooms. I love BASS GIBSON of course and WOMAN AT THE WELL. I picked ones I also have as my favorites of the day :-))

The color on Doyle Pierce is just exquisite! Temptation Eyes and I Wanna Piranha are my other favorites. So man nice ones!

I chuckled at your dog hair sheet changing scheme, pauli12. Our two aussies sleep with us--lots of shedding. We bought a couple of extra flat sheets that match our duvet cover, and we put them over the bed for the dogs to sleep on. I then switch dog sheets after a couple of days when I can see the dog hair accumulating and wash the accumulated dirty dog sheets on the weekends in a separate wash but at the same time as I do our regular sheets. Similarly, with the house, the accumulated dog hair (which is partly seasonal) determines how often we vacuum. We have a cleaner who comes every two weeks (a luxury we went without for 20 years, but are so thankful for now), but we clean in the alternate week--just not quite as thoroughly as she does. Distribution of labor? Hubby is the thorough cleaner (and I mean to the point of using old toothbrushes to scrub in tiny corners) and I am the more haphazard one. So I can get most of the house vacuumed and dusted in the time it takes him to scrub down one room. So we rotate which rooms he cleans slowly and thoroughly while I do my "good enough" job on the others. It's a bit quirky, but it seems to work for us. Gardening and yardwork we both love and thus do constantly as a form of recreation.

MP, the first pic os of my nasty bright blue 45 gallon rain barrel. Almost can't tell what it even is wrapped in a bamboo throw mat. The next one is of my greenhouse/potting shed made of dumpster dive and back alley finds. The third one is a close up of the windows, if you look through the pane you might be able to see I used old glass sliding doors to make the side walls, railway tie porch and a plywood floor. Now this is my shed, once a tool shack on a drilling rig. I keep my John Deer in here. I applied the mirrors with 2 sided carpet tape and used up some of the extra Cedar kicking around. That old metal headboard to the right, I pulled out of an abandoned farmyard. I have the foot board and side rails as well, both used as trellises now. The farmhouse had been gone for years just the root cellar and a few other obvious signs the property had once been someones homestead. I would have taken the old coal stove too, If I had an accomplice that day.

This Monday's native plant is Orange Coneflower, Rudbeckia fulgida. Often referred to as Black Eyed Susan in the horticultural trade, this highlights the confusion that can occur when using common names. Orange coneflower is a wetland plant found in fens, sedge meadows, calcareous springy banks, riverside swamps, meadows, and other wet (sometimes rocky) ground. However, in the garden it will thrive in medium moisture loam and clay soils. Mass in bold drifts in the perennial border, cottage garden, meadow, or naturalized area in full to part sun. Provides excellent yellow-orange blooms and color for the late summer, July through September. Grows to 36 inches on strong stems that need no staking. Highly conservative species on the Special Concern list in Michigan. Deer resistant.

Oh the folly of growing apricot in Winnipeg. Monday, May 7. Afternoon high 31 Celcius, overnight low about 16. Apricot just beginning to bloom. Morning of Thursday, May 10th. -7 Celcius according to Environment Canada. Probably about -5 in my backyard. Forecast low was 0 C so I didn't have any plans to protect them. I had hoped that the late spring would avoid these late morning frosts. No apricot crop this year I guess. Best grown as an ornamental fruit tree that occasionally, accidentally yields a crop.

Temptation Eyes is so beautiful!! I really liked looking at all the photos!

I hope you didn't answer this already and I didn't see it, but when you use the straws to protect the stamin, do you use a crimper on the end after you cut them up, or how do you get the end closed?

Michelle, I do have a crimper but I seldom use it. I usually cut the straws to length and then hold 5-6 in one pair of needle nose pliers. Then I heat all the open ends over the burner on the stove and then squish the ends closed with another pair of needle nose pliers. It's a great project for those long winter evenings when you don't have much to do.

Too bad that Blue Desire doesn't open well because that eye is gorgeous. Really like Bella Sera and Temptation Eyes.

Val, I've just been very happy that BLUE DESIRE has been able to survive the winter here. Jamie Gossard was pushing this daylily to growers who live farther south, and wouldn't guarantee hardiness outside of a greenhouse in this zone. So I'm very happy that it's still growing and increasing here in our garden.

What a bevy of beautiful blooms! You'll have us all drooling on our keyboards. It is impossible to choose just one of those gorgeous photos, but I will say that your photo has decided me that I need Johnny Cash! that is one real beauty. That you for this trip to the fancy side.

What a wonderfully toothy post! It was really hard to choose a favorite out of all of the lovelies, but as I can't grow teeth, I have a tendancy to admire yet ignore the blooms that other's post with them. My two favorites are DOYLE PIERCE and SAILING AT DAWN.

Just gorgeous. You have some mighty fine looking daylily blooms there. This could easily become another addiction to my clematis one.
