Dilemma: kitchen appliances

Must I have a ventilation appliance to go along with a 36" or 48" dual fuel range? I've been told that the retractable downdraft vent cannot be installed with a range and a vent hood would obstruct the open floor plan. (Replacing 18 yr old down draft jenn-air, 30").

I'm not sure if this is one of those things that has different codes depending on where you are. Have you asked a local builder if there is a requirement?

You heard right. For safety codes the retractable hood is not recommended for the ranges or range top.

Do you have to have a range? I know you can get cooktops that wide with retractable downdrafts. Kitchenaid makes a 30" gas stove that fits right into the Jennair downdraft venting you have now. It comes with a ceramic glass top for easy clean up and looks very nice. Something to consider if you can't fit in what you seem to really want.
