One good option is to watch ebay off-season. Some members have gotten great buys there.

Also, watch near the end of the season in your area. Often canning supplies are put on sale and can be stocked up for the next year.

Try Big Lots if you have one in your area. $.99 per doz. for Golden Harvest standard size. They never have wide mouth though. Walmart always has them, but all their lids are Ball and a little pricey.

I just paid $1.49 for Kerr lids at Walmart. I rarely find them at Big Lots.

Goodmans are $1.29 per box when getting cases. The GH lids are OK, but as mentioned they don't seem to have the wide mouth ones, or even much of a choice in the wide mouth jars. EBay might be a good choice, and yes, now is the time to get shopping on these, or after about mid November when most people are not canning much. Kerr and Ball are the same company now. Earlier Kerr lids had no dimple in the center, but instead were slightly convex until a vacuum was pulled, then the whole lid went slightly concave.

eBay, during the canning season, offers some great deals on bulk lids. Some even offer free shipping.

These lids are claimed to be reusable as the rubber seal is removable and reusable. I have not seen anyone really using them very much, and I think the company has gone now. The only concern would be the coating used on the metal surface of the lid. If it gets a tiny scratch and you don't know it, the canned item can get tainted with a metallic flavor. I think they also have a dimple like a Ball lids, to tell you that there is a vacuum present as it 'plinks' when its cooling, and pulls the dimple in slightly.

We've had some discussion of those Tattler lids on the forum before.

This system is similar to the old bail jars with rubber gaskets but in this case it's a plastic cap and a rubber gasket used with the traditional metal ring. European canning jars like Weck also use rubber gaskets.

The advertising says "FDA Approved", which I assume refers to the plastic lid material as "foodsafe." The FDA doesn't approve this style of lid for home canning.

I feel advertising them as "reusable" is also somewhat misleading. You're still going to have to buy replacement gaskets. They don't last indefinitely (life depending upon the food, processing time, etc.) and I'm not sure the cost savings is that great. With metal lids and rings you also have a "reusable component."

In the U.S. these kinds of gasket seals aren't recommended because Extension services have found them less reliable. But Europeans use them routinely. I don't know how the Tattler lids would perform with pressure canning. It's your call.

One thing that would concern me if I were thinking of buying the Tattler lids - there used to be a website for the product, but it's gone. It looks as if ebay is the only source. One thing about metal flats and rings - there're gobs of them out there and I don't think they'll disappear any time soon.

Do you live close to an Amish community? I buy from their stores -- usually get a case of lids at a time -- and they sell for just under $1 per dozen. That's Ball lids. They make a little; I save a lot. We're both happy.

Wow! Now I know where I will be buying my regular 70mm jar lids and bands. About a buck a box for lids, and about 9 cents for the rings (generics). Even Ball regular lids are at about $1.15 a box of 12, less cost for a bigger quantity.

Bulk means just that, usually bulk is many, and can be 100 or 1000 or more..

The generic regular mouth lids are $1.00 each, and the amount is 345 lids at $34.50

So the generic 70mm lids fit the Ball standard mouth and the Ball wide mouth is the same as the 86 from Fillmore Container?

And, what are the "plastisol" lids. Can they be used instead of Ball or Kerr lids?

Yes, they use a silicone based rubber that has a life of about 25 years or more. Its far better than old plain rubber seals. As to the Plastisol, thats a coating on the inside of the jars, and the seal as well. As mentioned in the descriptions, they are types made for water bath, hot pack, or cold pack. The generics and Ball lids can do both. The reason, plastisol is softer and more pliable than the silicone rubber, so it can soften too much if its heated twice, once in a hot pack, and then in a BWB. That design of lid might work better for me for my cold pack of pickled pepperoncini, that see no heat of any kind. The lids that come from Ball are defined as 70mm and 86mm now, as they moved to teh metrc system along with the liter and half liter jars..

There is a store in Iowa, Dutchman's that sells sleeves of canning lids, both regular and wide mouth. Also Lehman's in Kidron OH does. If you google Lehmans it will come up. However Dutchman's does not have a web site. I have not checked their prices this year. I bought some Tattler lids last year to give them a try and love them. i do a lot of canning. This year I bought more as the price of the lids seemed to have skyrocketed. The web site for the Tattlers lids is www.reusablecanninglids.com or just google it. They are still around. I just got my shipment. They have excellent service.

I have used Tatler. They are reusable. I will continue to use them and am getting ready to order more of them. Some time I hope to not have to buy metal ones. Very cost effective one you get enough to keep using them.
