I think this is some kind of Protea. Could someone please help me narrow it down?

My mother is about to leave for a trip to Hawaii and a friend asked her to find out what the plant is. She is afraid she will spend her whole time hunting down the plant name!

I have never seen anything like it, but a google search with "fringed bracts" took me to Protea, and the neriifolia looked the closest, but not exactly. Does anyone here know, and is it native to Hawaii?
