My first thought is powderpuff bush. The flower looks like lehua haole, but the leaves don't seem right.

Just did a quick search, and it seems that both names are applied to the same bush, while I've seen them used for two different plants. I'll let you take a look and see which one you like.

no, definitely not ohia.
"lehua haole" is an introduced plant with lehua-like flowers. I think the leaves are delicate pinnate, your picture doesn't look like that.

Yes, this is a Lehua haole plant. googl "plant lehua haole" and you will see the pictures.

Its called Calliandra emarginata. Our local grower calls it "Dwarf Powderpuff plant." I have one, and its a real nice plant. Pretty leaves, and those amazing flowers.
