I inherited mine when I moved to the house. I didn't even know they were there til they erupted! Mine are in full sun and do fine left alone. I've dug some out and it was basically thrown in the dirt any old way.

I think so, here is a picture. tropicalfreak you know alot about these, do you think a shell ginger can take full sun? I think they are amazing and my yard is big enough to handle a few. Dena

That's Alpinia Purpurata. I have the light pink one. The red I was given has yet to bloom. Full sun isn't good for them. Mine gets sun in the afternoon for a few hours but it gets ample water. Some Sun/Shade/bright light is best. You know they are in touch much sun when the leaves curl.

I have mine under a crape myrtle and it seems to love it there :-)

I would cover what you need to to make the baby plants shoot upwards. I tried this once but can't remember if it took. On the bush, when this happened, I would bury the stem(still attached to the plant)and flower to get a new plant going.
