Move to Kentucky, mid to western KY; very little snow days, mostly doesn't last more than a week. Very long Spring and Fall days. a nice summer with only 2-4 weeks of hot and/or humid days. Good ground for farming and cheaply priced. Old farmsteads (50-100 acre w/old house) go for as little as UNDER 100K. Happy house hunting.

Money will be a MAJOR issue on your homestead no matter where you choose to live. I'd like to suggest you check out the tax structure of the state you move to. Make sure it works for you. Some states, like NH, have no sales or income tax, but higher property taxes. That seems a poor choice for anyone with limited income, like a homesteader.

I don't think such a place exists but... if you're clever, you can position yourself in VT instead of NH or some surrounding area and do your shopping in NH. Of course, buy your meds in Canada. What a convenient area that New England is!

There are other places without sales tax though such as Oregon.

Oregon has no sales tax, but property taxes and a state income tax that are really high. Washington has sales tax and property tax, but no state income tax. I understand as well that Texas has no state income tax. I love the Pacific NW. Moderate Summers and winters. Beautiful forests and rivers. But it does rain in the winter off and on for about 5 months. But that other 7 months make it all worth it. Western Washington is pretty expensive the further east you go the cheaper land is. Plus the rainfall goes down as you get east of the cascade mountains. Just thought I would get my two cents worth in.

VT is nice- everyone that's not a tourist (skier) is either a hippy or a hick :) There are some great communities there as well.

New England is beautiful and I wouldn't move away. Woods and mountains, some good rural areas, but nothing as cheap as what was mentioned for KY. I'd also add that if you've not spent a whole winter someplace like VT... well... let's just say that the romance is balanced with being snowbound, subzero weather, and managing to pay for the heat (or to do it yourself with wood- good exercise if you have the back for it! :)

Don't want to discourage you on New England- but there's a heap of reality every winter. I wouldn't dream of missing it (but I was raised here).
