STERILE HOSTAS


Some hostas are completely pod sterile. Others are reluctant pod producers, and only a small percentage of the few seeds which are produced may be viable. In a few cases, a plant may be pod sterile but still able to produce some viable pollen. P.S. Please be aware of the following discrepancies:


1. Baby Bunting- The Hosta Library say Baby Bunting is sterile. However, Zilis says Baby Bunting produces many seed pods (The Hostapedia, page 91). Of course, a hosta may produce many seeds and yet the seeds may not be viable. Or perhaps someone has some misinformation. Does anyone know for sure?


2. Candy Hearts- The Hosta Library says that no seed pods develop. Zilis says that many seed pods develop (The Hostapedia, page 166). Does anyone know for sure?


3. There is conflicting information on the AHS Hosta Registry website. If you do a search to find a particular hosta and view the opening page, it will likely say that it produces seed. But if you read the full registration sheet, it may say that it does not produce seed, or that the seed is not viable. Kevin Walek has informed me that the True/False fields on the registration sheets are not working properly at the current time.
