Getting a new hosta-mobile

Ok, DON'T LAUGH!

Hubby and I are getting ready to trade my Explorer.

And in my head, I HAD to consider, "what car will allow me to transport hosta easily?".

Of course, my husband, who can't tell a Daybreak from an Elegans would NOT understand, nor would he even engage me in conversation of trading if he knew that part of my motivation was to get a vehicle that could more safely transport plants!

So, maybe you're not laughing, cuz YOU get it! You understand why it's important to have proper transportation when you're out on hosta runs, right?

What did we decide on? A Dodge/Chrysler minivan with full stow-n-go! This way, I can put all the seats into the floor of the van on-the-fly. A good feature if I end up buying out everything available at the convention!

I cannot believe that my gardening obsessions are affection my decisions of what car to buy!

Melissa, I had to laugh at this because I SO get. MY hosta obsession has been known to affect what groceries I buy, what clothes I buy, what time of year I go on vaction (can't leave when my babies are breaking dormancy, or when their in their full glory). It's a sickness I swear it is.

Alexis, I beg to differ. These are perfect examples of a rational, well-thought-out decisions made with the intent of improving the lives of those around us-completely altruistic in nature and you are both to be applauded. ;)Teehee.

ah...the hillbilly is tattling on me...yes we cram in the hostas when we go on a run...one run last summer we kept finding more and more great deals on wonderful hostas that it got to the point that the ONLY place left in my GMC Jimmy was on the floor between hubbys legs on the passenger side...and in his lap...every conceivable space behind the seats was occupied with hostas and some were actually wedged inside of other hosta pots (carefully as I hate broken leaves)...so the last place we stopped at hubby had to put the last few down by his feet and even hold a couple for the last 40 miles home....now theres a good sport huh? Oh absolutely. . besides you are to be applauded for your. . er. . a. . practicality. . Yes, you are practical person. . we hosta people are nothing if not practical. If there is a sale on a hosta we buy two just incase. We drive half way around the world for that special hosta so we are practical enough to buy up twenty or so more on our want list in case we don't get the chance to get back. Of course our practicality allows us to plan the trip so we can visit several hosta farms there and back. Why it stands to reason that we would choose a practical vehicle to travel in. . I mean. . that's what practical hosta people do. . makes sense to me.

Hey, wonder if we could make some practical shelves that would slide in and out so we could stack our obsession in there tighter. . . . lol

    Sidney,

Many pick-up trucks and bed liners have depressions for
    boards to do just that!

    thisismelissa,
Oh yes, Our new Rav 4 will hold 20 boxes 12 inches wide and high by 22 inches long and this was well known before we signed one paper! Priorities must be established to avoid further frustration..I applaud your practical calculations!

Perfect choice....The Grand Caravan with Stow and Go is the most practical vehicle ever made. It's great for hostas, yard waste, fishing. If you didn't have one before, why not?

    esox.... Why not for me?....

When I got my Explorer, I had no kids and no garden. So, I didn't know how much I needed one! We opted for a sport utility then.... just enough to haul crap to and from a rental property we were working on!

Once we find a van that we like and fits our price range, I honestly cannot see myself driving anything else for a VERY long time!

I just had to comment. Melissa you go for it!

I have just had a very similar experience. My 1990 Jeep had no blood pressure and was definitely deceased as our friend and mechanic said. I'd had it for 5 or so years and enjoyed the 4 wheel drive aspect because of living a mile up a steep road. When I thought of buying another car my heart went to the two Mini vans I'd had while the kids were growing up. The first was a Caravan and the second a Voyager which were pretty well interchangable. The thought of having a van again made me almost giddy. I loved them both. I'm not much of a car orientated person but they felt like sitting in the living room. They were the only cars of mine or anyone else's that I can say I felt truly comfortable in. I decided to go back to a van. It seemed kind of silly - one old lady by herself in a great big van - but so what. Since we were limited financially to under $2000 we watched all adds. About 2 weeks ago we found a private sale a half hour from here and bought a '96 Ford Windstar. I'm in heaven. I don't like the exterior look (sloped front) as much as the older, squared Caravans, but inside it's like coming home. It's so "modern" it's got air conditioning, auto windows and locks and AIR BAGS. Imagine my surprise that they had them almost 15 years ago. I'm gradually joining the modern world. We managed to get this gem for $1800 so I'm happy. I wish you luck in your search. I cannot see myself driving anything else ever. Myrle

So nice to know how many of us there are and we are a pretty funny bunch-lol.

I am a itty bitty short gal so my vehicle has to fit me... I drive a wildfire red 4 wheeled drive tracker. The back seats fold down and I can get tons of flowers and such inside. It will hold 25 bags of mulch. I can drive along my flower beds and drop the mulxh where it is needed. It makes life so easy. If it is a bigger thing I need my hubby delivers it in his truck or trailer. I must say, Life is good......

Not only use a van for a single trip to buy hostas. When in vacation you need a temporary staging area to unload your plants for a few days while looking for more. We are known in one beach hotel to convert the area of our room in front of the large sliding glass door into a garden, surely with plastic underneath to protect the carpet. The challenge is then later to see if all the loot can get into the car/van for our trip home.
