Overwintering in pots?

Hello,

I have a patch of Daylilies (mostly Asian) that needs to be moved. I also need to divide them as they are too crowded. My problem is that the new site will not be ready until spring.

IÂm in zone 5. I was wondering if I could dig them up, divide them and, over-winter in pots outside. Am I dreaming here or is there a good chance they will make it until replanting in spring?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Bill

I live in zone 5 too and have been wondering the same thing. We put all our proliferations in pots and are planning on putting them in a sheltered area with several inches on leaves on top. Will this work or should we plant them in the ground?

I'm a bit confused here, daylilies aren't described as Asian. Do you have true lilies? They love the cold and probably would be happy in pots that far north. You should try the lily forum for true lilies. Lilies grow with a central stem, daylilies grow with grass type foliage.

Mine are all daylilies. Guess I overlooked the word Asian.

    Doh!

Thank you ladylovingdove for pointing out my mistake. Yes, I should have posted my question in the Lilies forum. We have both daylilies and lilies and I guess we are in the habit of just collectively refering to them as daylilies.

    All the best,

I am in zone 4 and if I have to overwinter a daylily in a pot I sink the pot inot the ground in an out of the way spot. I then pull the whole pot out in the spring when I am ready to plant the DL in a permanent place. Works like a charm!

I have overwintered Daylilies, Asiatic lilies and other perennials in pots. I have used different methods and they have all survived. I haved stacked the pots against the sheltered east wall of my house, then made a wall around them with bales of hay, placed a few 2x4's on top and draped a tarp over the top. I have also stacked the pots in an unheated garage which is attached to my house. I wait until the pots are frozen before placing in garage. Don't do anything to them until spring when I bring them out. Some friends place their pots against a sheltered wall and dump leaves on top. Lots of leaves. MIke.
