The carnage!!!

I had been outside yesterday enjoying the nice weather when I came into the house only to find one of my cats chewing up my H. kentiana! Mostly the newer, prettier leaves, chew marks on several and broken leaves everywhere! She's never bothered them before, and suddenly, just because the other day I was talking to it (we all talk to our plants, don't we?) saying how pretty it was getting, then this happens. Urgh! Cats! It loved sitting in that window, facing west near the kitchen sink, now it sits in the spare bedroom in a north window, door shut and not able to enjoy it like I had. At least I know now that hoya, at least this one, isn't toxic to cats as she it still being a brat! :(

Bummer, Karen! Hope you gave kitty a little reprimand - like that makes any difference with kitties! When I first started growing plants, I had to get pretty creative to keep my very adventuresome male kitty out of my plants. He loved to climb and jump and one day, I came home to a big shelf of plants tipped over! I lived in an apartment with VERY high ceilings and those old, huge tall windows, so hubby rigged hanging shelves on pullys I could pull up out of kitty's jump-reach, then lower to water the plants. What a pain...

I've been kitty-less for a couple years now (lost my 20-year-old Samantha May '05...) and I'm planning to get a couple here in the next week or two, so I'm going to have to get inventive again, I'm sure! It's been so long since I had a young mischievious one that I'm sure I'm in for some not-so-pleasant surprises!

Same thing happend to me when I was babysitting a kitten. I was so used to my 17 year old cat that just lays around, so I didnt bother moving anything. Whoops! Im glad the only thing that got really wrecked what my first DS-70 flowers. But he was into (and onto) everything!

What about one of the sprays that contain hot peppers or other ingredients that will deter cats from chewing the plants. I have never used them but it is worth a try.

Miss Kitty got reprimanded, but she didn't care. I would like to get a hook and hang it in front of a window, but the boyfriend doesn't want holes in the walls....well, he might have to deal with it cuz I'm not going to hide my plants when all that is needed is to hang them to keep them from the cats....BTW Denise, if you were about 600 miles closer (or however far away you are), I have five kittens for you to choose from if you want another kitten...lol!

    Karen,

Yes, at the price of gas, that would make them a bit costly! Let's see... Ohio's on the other side of Indiana, my bro lives in Indianapolis which is 600 miles away, so you're even further!

If you're going to grow a lot of plants, your BF is going to have to compromise about the holes in the walls. They're easy enough to fix (if you rent...) Good landlords always paint before the next tenant moves in anyway, so if you fix the holes and make it paint-ready, you should have no problem... We own our house and I've got ceiling hooks over almost every window, then I also have little cup-hooks I hang directly over each window, centered, in the woodwork so smaller ones (6-8" pots) can hang right in the window, against the glass. Almost all my Hoyas in the house are hanging. I like the look...

Bad little kitty's. I am blessed that my 1 yr. old female doberman doesn't much care about my plants. Probably b/c I have had them since I got her at 6 weeks old also if she wants to sniff them I usually tell her no and she wanders somewhere else.

I would like to see a pic of your suction cup hooks. I can't believe that actually holds your plants.

    Thanks Shanna
