jars at big lots

Just bought another 10 cases of Golden Harvest jars at the local Big Lots. They said a lady was in there this morning and was upset that she couldn't find many cases of jars, and no lids. When I was there this evening, they had about 5o cases jelly jars, 20 of the pints and 20 quarts, as well as about 50 boxes of lids, but in a different location in the store. The prices are less than Ball, with the jelly jars at $6.50 a case, as well as pints. The Quarts were $7 per case and the lids were just $.99 a dozen. Probably the last of these they will get this year, unless they get in another shipment later on. I hope I have enough for this season, as its the bigest canning year I have ever done in my life!

I wish I could find Golden Harvest lids that are plain gold without that hideous blue design. I started labeling lids with a silver sharpie because I can see it over the blue design & it's easy to read at an angle.

I got Golden Harvest jars at Walmart, but they had the lids on just like the Ball ones, so I didn't use those lids. I have about 100 to mail back to Jardin so I hope they'll give me enough coupons to cover next year.

One of my local Big Lots had jelly jars, the other one had nothing. Stocked up on the jelly jars--those are the ones I have to buy every year! I haven't been too successful in training family to give me the empties so I can refill them.

If you have a Menards close to you, you might try there, they had a dozen quart jars with lids on sale for 5.99 with a 3.00 rebate.

Big Lot's has the golden lids. I wish they carried wide mouth ones. They have great prices on their jars. I save the wide mouth jars until I have filled all the regulars. Wide lids are twice the price of regulars. I can find Golden Harvest jars at out Dollar General stores.

Diane, thanks. Looks like they only sell them with rings, and I'm swimming in rings already. I like the red gingham lids without bands though, those could be useful. But those prices seem really high...$2-3 for 12 lids? I get them for less than $1.50 at the hardware store. They have a lot of cool stuff though. The wide mouth half gallon jars could be useful for fermenting, I've never seen those before. And if I decide I can spare any jars for the fair, I might buy the round jar labels since I scrawled labels on the lids with my silver sharpie.

Yes, the Big Lots In Peabody MA, did have Golden Harvest lids which are plain, as well as many cases of the 8 ounce jelly jars. I use 2 inch round diameter sticky labels for all my jars. Print Shop version 20 has a custom label option. I have 40 files of various colors and text that are all round canning labels for everything I can. Originally, the 2 inch diameter rounds were very hard to find, so I had a company in NH custom cut me a 5000 sheet order. They are a heavy paper glossy stock which works very well in an inkjet or laser printer. I made the label files up so that they overlap the edges of each round, which gives them 'full bleed' coverage. I only need to adjust the position of the printing before I run a sheet through. Its done by making a 'draft' print on plain paper and placing it behind a sheet of blank labels to verify the alignment. Now, the 2 inch diameter rounds are made by a few national label stock companies like Avery.

    To Melva
    Hi Melissa
I got those lids a few months ago and they just sold the lids without the bands, guess they just sell them together now. I like those red gingham lids also. I've also seen yellow ones but they were on jars. If you are looking for nice canning labels go to the following site: www.alottalabels.com They have some nice and different labels. I get mine from them for my gift jars.

Kitchen Krafts also sells a full jar lid with no seperate ring, as well as some preprinted labels with space to add what you want.

I just visited the Big Lots in Seekonk, MA, and they had many cases of Golden Harvest jars in varying sizes. I didn't see lids being sold separately, but I didn't look that closely either! Bought a couple boxes of pint jars; wish I could buy some spare empty boxes for the Ball jars I've bought in the shrink wrap.

Luckily, I save all my old, empty, Ball boxes, and the GH boxes The Big Lots lids are small boxes of a dozen that are a pinkish/tan color. These are usually tucked on a shelf where all the rest of the kitchen stuff is. Its just the round lids, with no rings
