Is a big screen tv in a dining room (open to the kitchen) acceptable ?

Recently removed a wall between dining room and kitchen and added an 8x4 picture window which provides a beautiful view while in the dining room. It's a great space and can be used for either formal or informal family dining. I would love to have a large screen tv in the space for viewing while dining informally or for view while cooking. I am being advised that one should never have a tv in a dining room. Would love to hear opinions and comments.....Thanks

Look at TVCoverups.com for a great solution for your dilemma. Your tv will be hidden under a beautiful picture which you can raise up manually or with a remote control and voila, there's your television! Life's too short to worry about what you can and can't have in your own house. Go for it! Be happy :)

I think I fall on the, no TVs in the dining room side of this argument, but maybe there is a way to have one that can be hidden for more formal use of the room?

I am not a fan of TVs everywhere, but especially in the bedroom and I would have to add the dining room. They can be very distracting. Why have it interfer with conversation? It is like having guest who doesn't know when to stop talking.

Absolutely no problems with a tv in a dining room.. It actually lessens the "much over-rated formality"of a dining room. Not knowing the floor plan, if there is room to wall mount, use a swing mount along an "imaginary" dividing line between the kitchen and dining room so when in kitchen just turn it towards you and when sitting at the table turn it your way.....

I would say it depends on the size of the screen in comparison to the room. If it's so huge it dominates the room, probably not good. Except during football season!

I'd rather see a small set in the kitchen. Communicating with family during a meal is already becoming a rarity...sadly.
