Pip-pip-pooray!

Just when I thought That Darn Squirrel (the 4-legged relative to The Chinese Neighbor) had dug up my Maui Buttercups, I got a wonderful surprise today! There is a big fat pip near the Maui Buttercups I.D. stake. Walking over to the Neighbors Plot garden on the other side of the sidewalk, I first plucked out a broken light bulb's screw-in end and tossed it. Typical, to have to pluck refuse from that garden. Then, perusing my heuchies (which are all coming online now with new baby leaves, except for possibly Georgia Peach) and their hosta companions, I espied a beautiful set of spring-green pips from the location of the Paradise Island I.D. stake. A walk around the rest of the Neighbors Plot gave me a false pulse of elation; I thought that my lovely Gypsy Rose had also pipped, but it was just a green leaf blown over the buried roots. Oh well, plenty of time, plenty of time.

We are supposed to get a big rainstorm tonight and tomorrow, just in time to make it a wet walk to and from the first Passover seder, but that should also be a boon to my burgeoning heuchies, bursting up in new leaf dicentra, still dormant hostas, and maybe be just the trick to get Georgia Peach's engine to turn over at last.

This year is also unusual in that my Hebrew birthday (according to the Jewish calendar) AND my secular birthday are BOTH during Passover. Can you say flat birthday cake? My grandmother, of blessed memory, used to bake me a permitted sponge cake for my birthday, but she is long gone. I think I will defer any celebratin' until after Passover, when I can have a piece of devil's food delight.

Thank you Hostafolk for good B-D wishes. Signing off now until Wednesday--not allowed to use electrical devices during 1st 2 days of Passover nor the last 2 days. Those days are like the Sabbath. But I'll be thinking about the Hosta Forum and admiring my new hosta pips for the year!

By the time you return, you'll have more pips to shout about. Blessings to you on your observance days.

Yes, MOCC, I see more pips (Raspberry Sundae, Paradise Island) BUT we also had a terrible rainstorm last night ending in HAIL & SNOW. I am worried that the pips were damaged by the cold. The night time temps hit 32 degrees for an hour or two. The pips seemed OK this morning, but damage may have occurred to them. AND, some Darned Squirrel uprooted entirely one of my hostas. I don't know which one, because the I.D. stake was missing. I found the hosta roots barely covered by soil plus the non-pipped top of it, all on top of the soil. I hastily toed out a hole and put the hosta in it with my shoe, gently. Then I kicked soil over it. You are not allowed to garden during Passover, but you could make a rough save of a plant like I did. I am worried that, without soil cover, the hosta will have been damaged by the cold. The roots were certainly moist after the rain deluge hour after hour.

I had to walk to my host's for the seder in that deluge, quite a nice long walk. I wore my head-to-ankles LLBean raincoat with a warm fleece jacket under that, which sufficed to get me from Point A to Point B and back again without getting soaked or frozen. I was more worried about my hostababies and the snow!
