Hosta 'loving' dog

My hosta are just beginning to come up. Yesterday, my dog decided to dig one up and all that was found was ONE eye in good shape, BUT with no roots attached. I'm a novice with hosta. Can it be rooted and how? Currently it is in a small glass with a bit of water. I'd rather not have to buy another plant. Might have to replace the dog though. :-)

Awww poor doggie. :) You have nothing to lose to keep it in water for a while and see what happens. If there really was not a trace of a root, it is very doubtful. If you could look around for the roots that would be better. The roots with a small piece of the crown might be babied back to health.

Good luck and give the pup a hug for me.

Many time you can get it to grow, plant the baby in some soil ASAP,just covering up the white part,It should be fine,in a couple of weeks it willsend out new roots.

To avoid rot I would use a container of rock, especially porous volcanic rock about the size of your little fingernail. You can beat the volcanic rock to size and don't use the smaller pieceÂs, this little system has a lot of air and moisture.

Sink the plant in the rock or rather put it on rock and fill around with more rock.

Now put water in the bottom so the water can evaporate and condense on the rock around this broken part, this will give you very clean water.

Any form of soil will be full of organisms ready to attack this damaged piece.

    No fertilizer.

I have saved many this way but certainly not all.

Keep the dog, you may not want to buy more plants but you can't buy another dog like your dog.

Adorable furry babies you have, ester opal. I wouldn't really get rid of my dog for merely trying to help by doing some landscaping for me. I'll give the volcanic rock idea a go and see what happens. Now if I could only get my sweet, but sometimes naughty, Husky to dig holes for me to plant my hosta in, rather than removing them. Thank you all for the advice.

I haven't posted at all this spring because of a dog LOL. My husband and I train dogs professionally and have German Shepherd here to train for my sister-in-law. The dog is a doll and is staying in our house instead of at our kennel. I had her out in our backyard a few weeks ago (where she has been left many times during her stay) and apparently the tender baby hostas where to much to resist. She proceded to dig up and eat about 10 of my new additions from last spring. She also managed to totally mix up the markers so I will have to do a bit of research to remember which was where and determine what she got. I do know that she got Devon Green, Elvis Lives and Torchlight, not sure on the rest yet. Needless to say I have banished her to the kennel for a bit. I was so depressed about it that I couldn't even come to Gardenweb to vent. I think I'm getting over it and will have to start a list to replace.
