Pickled (not dilly) Beans

My Grandmothers used to make several quarts of pickled beans while canning the summer green beans. These weren't Dilly beans. They were salty and tangy, but I'm not sure if they added vinegar or simply brined the beans and allowed them to ferment before canning. Both were from Kentucky originally, so it was an Appalachian recipe they used, which has been lost to me with their passing.

Is anyone here familiar with these beans? More importantly, can you tell me how they're made? I've been wanting to make these for the past 3 years, and can't seem to find a recipe that doesn't use dill/vinegar/sugar.

Thanks
