new blooms

Well after what seems like an eternity away from the gardening forums,I am back!!! A lots been going on around here (too much to go in to detail about)so lets just say that i'm back and leave it at that!!!

Winter for us was down right cold and I lost a number of hoyas even having them in the gh. I'd say at least a dozen. Now that winter is FINALLY over all of the hoyas have been moved outside under the shade house and they are thriving!!! Everyone has sprung back to life and many are now blooming. I have quite a few which will be first time bloomers for me including 1 clone of archboldiana and several clones of pottsii. I've had some of those pottsii plants for almost 7 years now and FINALLY!! they are doing what they are supposed to do BLOOM!!!

Also something freaky is going on with my computer. I've been taking and uploading a lot of pictures, then trying to send them to my email as I normally do so I can share them but the have been disappearing somewhere!!! This has been going on since November. Well yesterday quite by accident I found them!!! So here's a few.

This is a cluster of buds from archboldiana white form IML 0414. They look like they'll explode if they grow another iota but as of this afternoon they still were not open and this pic is several days old already.

This is hoya pottsii IML 0353. I LOVE these cantaloupe colored flowwers!!and this is the very first and only clone out of 14 different clones of pottsii that I grow,to bloom

here's a side view of the same flowers

Well that's about all that I have for now but I promise not to stay gone so long and post more bloom shots soon!!

    Carolyn,

I really appreciate the offer to help replace the hoyas which I lost this winter. But most of them were newly collected hoyas that I had gotten last summer from a friend in Thailand who actually goes into the Thai jungle and collects new species. At the moment i'm not sure if I will try to replace them or not.

This hoya collecting thing has gotten to a point where I desperately need to sit back and analyze the situation and decide if I really NEED to keep them all!!! I've now had to expand the gh from 30ft long to 60ft long just to accommodate what I already had and the sad thing is I currently have an order in to Iris Marie for at least 30 more and I got a shipment in from FL today!!

Collecting hoyas is like smoking crack. Once you get that first hit,it's just about impossible to stop!!!

It's nice though to have fellow forum friends who are always willing to help a fellow grower in times of need!!

    David,

You're more than welcome, and I'm just sorry I couldn't help. :) I'd love to see pictures of your order from Iris Marie when it arrives. :)

I hope you don't mind my asking, but who do you order from in FL? I'd love to see those pictures, too!

    Have a lovely evening,

    Carolyn

Congrats on the blooms David especially the pottsii after such a long wait. Keep us updated as your other plants come into bloom.

Your pottsii is lovely. That's a nice bloom on it too. 7 years is a LONG wait!

I'm happy to see other people with bee clips. They are my favorite, because not only can you clip with the pronged part, but with the bee's 'butt' too. I have a hoop clipped to a stake using those bee clips on a number of my hoyas.

Sorry to hear you lost some hoyas. The only thing I lost over the winter was my jasminum officinale, though that's partially my fault. Looking forward to seeing your pics!

Those are just BEAUTIFUL David...I never tire of looking at your amazing collection of hoyas. Thanks so much for sharing them. Love them both!

Welcome back David.....We have missed you. Those are just bee..u..tiful! Thanks for sharing!

Any word on the Iris Marie order, ie...will it be shipped out on time?

Carolyn, my FL shipment came from Antone Jones at dischidia.com. After a semi bad (shipping time) experience with him last year I went out on a limb and decided to give him another try. I've bought from him twice recently and both times have been very pleased with transit time and plant material.

    MikeD,

this clone of pottsii that has bloomed is only about 2 years old. The 7 year old plant still has not given any flowers but grows like a weed!!! I also have at least 3 other pottsii clones which I got as cuttings last year that bloomed this spring.

Quinn the bee clips are the only ones that I use on my hoyas I find that the dragon fly and butterfly clips are way too small and pinch of the new growth. The bee clips are just the right size to go around bamboo and just about any other type of trellis.

Thanks Pug,i'll try to keep the pics coming!!! Once I get the new cover on the gh things will pretty much be back to normal and I can settle down long enough to take some pictures to share with you guys.

    LGS,

last word that I got from Iris was that she intended on starting to process my group order some time this month.like within the next week or so. She said if she was not able to get it done then that there would not be another chance for he to do so until the week of July 4th.

    Quinn and David,

Where do you get your bee clips from? I can't find any in my local area. Is there a specific site?

    Thanks,

    Carolyn,

my friend Sara ( she lives in Montana) and I bought ours from a vendor on Ebay and I honestly do not recall what their user name was as it's been several years since we got them. We get like 500 or so at a time to split and it was very inexpensive.

I'll try to get in touch with her and see if she can remember who it was.

Here's some more hoya "eye candy" for you all to enjoy!!! These were taken about a half hour ago.

This is hoya mindorensis ,one of my favorites

This one should explain WHY it's one of my favorites!!

next is hoya kerri, this is a beautiful flower but it makes the biggest mess with all that dripping nectar!!

then we have hoya lacunosa "snow caps" this has grown to be quite the little monster plant. Grows like a weed!!

then there's hoya cv. Noelle which is well worth growing for it's beautiful foliage alone!! I'm not sure why the leaves get those raised purple bumps on them but they do when I move the plant outside in extremely bright light. When it goes back in to the gh for the winter the spots seem to go away.

last but not least is another favorite of mine and you can see why. This is H. fungii!!

    Enjoy!!

Thanks for the info, David. I think I found a place online to get them (the bee clips)

I LOVE the flowers! I recently bought an H. mindorensis. Came to me with a peduncle . . . but alas, the buds that were forming have all fallen off. :( Maybe soon!!!

    Carolyn

The archboldiana flowers are opening up right now,but it's too dark to take a pic so i'll get some tomorrow.

I also noticed today that ,finally after many years of waiting,my hoya aldrichii has peduncles on it!! I also have a number of other first timers with peduncles and buds in various stages of development. Including oreogena,2 clones of erythrostemma, a NOID Thai species, variegated obovata, pandurata and a new clone of mindorensis.

Here's a link to a place that I found earlier today that sells the bee clips. As I mentioned before Sara and I bought ours together on Ebay and not for near as much as what they are on this site. I f I remember correctly it seems like we paid under $50 for 500 of them and did a 3 way split another friend.

I got mine from Tindara Orchid Supply. The clips can also be found at RepotMe.com. I like to add them to an order when I am getting other supplies.

Forgot to say, great pics! I love speckled lacunosa. I got similar looking brown spots on my subcalva, but it stays inside. I wonder what it is? Subcalva was in a south window when it happened.

Great blooms! Looking forward to seeing archiboldiana!

    Kelly

Wow...eye candy is right!! Thanks for more great pictures David. I can see why Mindorensis is a favorite...flowers are so pretty! Enjoyed looking at all of them, hard to pick favorites since they are all so wonderful. Looking forward to more pictures!

Pug, I love all of my hoyas but some like the mindorensis with those ice crystal flowers just really reach out and grab you!!! I'd would never have bought mindo for it's foliage alone as I find it to be just blah as far as that goes!!

Others I have bought for no other reason that the foliage caught my eye and when I first started collecting hoyas the leaf was the last thing I looked at.

Quinn, i'm not sure what the spots are. I grow my subcalva in the same light and it doesn't get them. Usually it's just the cv. Noelle and as I mentioned before once the plant goes back into the gh where the light is more diffused it seems to clear right up so i'm leaning towards the fact that the almost direct morning sunlight on it for a few hours is the reason.

Well as promised here are the archboldiana blooms. I purchased this clone of archie from David Liddle as the white clone IML 0414 but as you'll see in the pics when grown under different conditions the flowers can and often will change color.Sorry the first 3 of the 4 are not the best quality pics.

this is hoya sp. Ban Ngong Ngoy

and here's heuschkeliana yellow form which to me smells exactly like hot buttered popcorn

All gorgeous especially that impressive Hoya archboldiana. I have that same one from Mr. Liddle but it's still fairly small, hoping to see lots of growth from it this summer.

    Mike

What do mindorensis leaves look like? I seem to only see the flowers in pics. About the bee clips: I agree, they pinch less. There is also a larger butterfly clip that I like to use, for the same reason. The clip action on that is not as tight, it's more of a gentle clip, if that makes any sense.

Archboldiana is unreal looking. How big are those flowers? It looks like one I can't fit into my current setup. Heuschkeliana is so cute. I can't wait until my little cutting grows up and blooms.

    Welcome back, Michael!

Wow, you're lucky to have all those blooms. Mine are being stingy at the moment, but hopefully soon, I'll see some flowers. I have fungii but not a sign of new growth since I got it. The flowers are all so unique and I bet it smells good in your greenhouse!

Those pictures of H. archboldiana are just spectacular!! I can't get over how pretty they are...Wow! The rest of the pics are lovely too. Sure would love to tour your greenhouse someday.

David, I'm guessing H. archboldiana gets very large...the plant I mean? I really need more space,lol...TFS!

Archboldiana is spectacular! What other LARGE flowered ones do you grow?

    Kelly

Kelly, thus far this archboldiana has been the only large flowering hoya species to bloom for me.
I have 3 clones of archie, oncychoides, mcgillivrayii and at least 8 eriostemmas which all have large flowers. Some of the eriostemma flowers can be up to 3" in size. I also have a couple of archboldiana crosses that have not bloomed yet but i'm guessing that they will be large flowered as well.

Pug the archboldiana doesn't get quite as big as one might think. Yes it does need it's space to grow but no more so than any other hoya. Lately mine has been producing leaves that are 2-3 times larger than normal.
    David

One of my eriostemmas is developing buds right now also. It'll be the first to bloom if the buds actually hang on and continue to develop, and knock on wood so far they are!!! I have had other eriostemmas to form peduncles but none to actually bloom so far.

This one has been blooming for a few weeks now and is a continuous bloomer throughout the summer. It's lobbii (orange)

Wow! All I've got blooming are lacunosa 'snow caps', obscura, and my new cutting of litoralis is trying REALLY hard. Has been since three days after it got here. I really think it might bloom!

    David, those are beautiful!!!

    Carolyn

a few more pics today. This is hoya arnottiana,it's been blooming for a few a while now. This is the second round of flowers!!! I like the all white, they really stand out!!

This is hoya erythrostemma and this is the very first time it has ever bloomed for me. This clone came from David Liddle and is supposed to be the all white clone (white collas & corona) but as you can see it has a bit of red on the coronas probably from my growing conditions.

Awesome pictures David...as always. That last one is so pretty, love the pink and white combination.

    Beautiful. I wanted H. arnottiana before . . . but NOW . . . I REALLY want one!!! ;)

    Carolyn

Loving the orange lobbii, especially! Great pictures!

    Kelly

Great pics, the erythrostemmma is just fantastic with the little drops of nectar shining in the sun.

    Mike

Kelly, I really like the lobbii flowers as well. I've got a few other clones of it that are supposed to be different colors that i'm anxiously waiting to see bloom!!

Mike I forgot to taste those flowers to see what they were like. YES!! I do stick my tongue to all new hoya flowers to see what the nectar tastes like!!

I tried the nectar of a few as well, do you find that the taste is different for each species? I guess the scent is different so the taste could be as well.

    Mike

I really like the color of these flowers, this is hoya limoniaca which is blooming heavily at the moment.

Oh my, I really like that David, I just received this on as a cutting so it will be awhile, but I have this to look forward to.
