when to cut back catmint?

i'm loving nepeta this year - it's been blooming and fabulous for about 6 weeks, but it is now past its prime. Has anyone cut back their catmint like "the books" say, in hopes of a second flush of bloom? When's the right time to do it - so that you enjoy the first flush of bloom to the fullest, but give the plant enough time to bloom again before frost? I'd like to try but i have several large catmint plants and it will leave BIG holes so i keep postponing it.
