I would decorate for the seasons, just to keep things fresh and interesting. So I would get fall decorations like pumpkins and candles and baskets. Then each season it changes, but try to keep some there that stays like baskets, they can play into all seasons.

Why not try rock sheet it .

I would be tempted to put a live topiary tree front and center, with clear glass candle holders and colorful candles on the side. Make the candleholders of different heights to add interest. [houzz=]

Thanks everyone! I have taken a couple of ideas and now am on the search to find a few things. I just need some things to bring some height to a empty space.

Find a large painting, in your decorating color choices, and prop it (from behind) so it comes out to the mantel.

I think the contrasting paint color is a factor. If you can paint both sides the same color and add some height with iron or stacked art it would be cool. It looks like you have some special family photo's you would like to showcase- what about blowing those up with mountings and frames and stacking 3 on each side? I have a corner mantel design dilemma myself- so take this idea with a grain of salt. Please do post a pic once you have decided. Good luck!

To me the major problem is the walls are not the same color. If you are unwilling to change that, I would suggest using a low triangular or horizontal bowl with 12 to 20 inch interesting branches. Sometimes you the best ones are found on your walks. https://www.pinterest.com/debcudak/branches/

I agree, build a flat wall and add a large round mirror or clock and a few large decorative vases in varying shapes and sizes. Keep it simple. It'll make more of a statement that way.
