Native Nectar Plants for Hummingbirds

Hi, everyone! It's almost time to gear up for the hummers here in Oklahoma. Latest spotting according to Journey North was near Dallas, Texas.

I have a few native plants in my garden that the hummers are attracted to:

Silene regia

Flame Acanthus

Lonicera Flava

Hibiscus coccineus

Spigelia marilandica (Indian Pink)

Turk's Cap (Malvaviscus)

Lobelia cardinalis

I would like to add a few more and am wondering if any of you grow natives that the hummers like, or have any suggestions.

All of the viorna group Clematis attract hummingbirds.
The flowers provide nectar even after a heavy rain. The flowers are urn shaped and face down . I've watched hummers visit every single flower in bloom on a vine.

Clematis viorna, pitcheri, crispa, texensis, addisonii, versicolor, reticulata, glaucophylla are just some of the species native to the southeastern US and are hardy to zone 5.

Aquilegia canadensis, columbine, is also a magnet for them.

They sure like honeysuckle! And the also like my zinnias but not sure either is "native".

I am not sure of your growing conditions, but Penstemon barbatus (or other Penstemons), any Agastache and Monarda (bee balm) will be huge hits in your garden.

Any of the Salvias will be good as well as Tecoma Stan or you may see it as Texas Bells it has large yellow tube flowers. Hummingbird mint and Agastache known as Giant Hyssop in some places. Cigar plant is good also. Salvias are my favorite because they are easy to grow and are drougt tolerant and they are the first to bloon and also the last to go in the fall. Keep us updated with what you go with or are able to find.

They go crazy for trumpet creeper. The best cultivar is 'madame galan'.

I agree with nikonhead - Tecoma stans (Yellow Bells of Texas). I have a planter with 3 plants that are overwintered as house plants (2 zones too cold). The hummers love 'em, they're in the same family as Trumpet Creeper.

Crossvine is a great plant/vine that blooms extremely heavy in the spring and summer me and the hummers love this plant.
