I was just thinking of asking this question! Would love to hear other's successful responses. Last year, my first atracting hummingbirds, I used a trick I'd read about: red/orange surveyor's tape. I tied bows of it to a flowering crab tree. And I got some spring migrants. This year I'm adding another tip I read: artificial red flowers.

lv6b- I tried that last year. Didn't work for me. Had the feeder out early a few years-nothing. Tried the flowers and tape-nothing. DH even bought red construction flags and decorated the yard(neighbors couldn't figure out what it was all about!) Want some spring migrants but I guess I don't have what they want. I keep thinking it has something to do with cover and nesting sites....or not enough spring bug food. If I a red roof, do you think they'd notice??? Jan

I think the surveyor's tape works...I gave some to my husband's niece too. It seemed to work for her also. She had tried only a few times to feed them in years past.

His nephew (lives about 3 blocks away) has been feeding hummers for many years. They all live in the UP of Michigan & there's tons of RTHs there.
There's nothing more fun than getting dive bombed by a hummer & watching (or trying to watch) the the activity at all their feeders.
I had always thought the southern tier states had all the hummers until we went north. WOW!
