The diameter of the light you have up seems right for the space, so I would measure and use that as a guideline for size. With your glass table and the clean lines of your chairs, a contemporary fixture would certainly fit the style. Square or round would work and then go with what you like. Do you like crystals and bling? Or something with more metal, an industrial look? Match any metal on the fixture with your cabinet knobs which look like brushed nickel.

If you like a more industrial look then I would recommend painting over the script walls to something more silver gray...BM beacon gray.

Do think your weathered elegance choice is good based on table - hard to get true idea without larger viewpoint of room/rooms - Have fun!

Don't mind the mess but here at some more pics. We are looking to change out our lights on the fireplace as well.

Take a look at some of these fixtures and see what you think. They have the chandeliers and matching sconces. Hinkley makes good quality lights. I bought 2 in another style for our bathroom:

Looks a little too country for the industrial look. Table and chairs would go well with judyg's choice though.

HI -- There are two light fixtures I think would look great for you. Restoration Hardware there is a round metal orb and also a birdcage style . they are differant , true art pieces .

The light that JudyG posted looks great but I would have the metal painted black to go with your chairs. I would paint the walls a light taupe that would show off the chairs and light. Looks like the cabinets seem kind of country. Placing new handles on them would co-ordinate with the table and chairs. I would choose long black handles that look something like a bar. The black would bring out the colour of the cabinets too.

This might be a nice compromise - round, contemporary drum shade with the unexpected sparkle of a simple crystal chandelier -

your table and chairs don't match the rest of the room.
I would think about colored glass pendants to bring in the rest of the room.
by the way the diameter of your next chandelier should not exceed the diameter of your table less 12" and the smallest diameter chandelier that will look good in the space is the diameter of the table less 24".

PERHAPS YOU MIGHT WANT TO FOLLOW THE LINE OF THE KITCHEN AND DO RECESSED LIGHTING, IT IS CLEAN LINE AND WON"T DETRACT FROM THE VIEW TO THE BACKYARD..

Recessed lights are a good idea when the table top is not glass. the glass will reflect the light back at the people sitting at the table.
you are going to do better with a close to the ceiling decorative fixture that allows for the view into the back yard and gives indirect light at your eating area. What you need to avoid is turning your table top in to a mirror that reflects back into the face of the people sitting at it.

A drum shade light with crystal and slipcovers for the chairs would do wonders. I don't think " industrial" fits in here.

Love the table. Where did you buy it?

You have way too many different styles going on here, you have colonial mixed with a touch of a venetian element and then you have art deco...you really cannot incorporate all this into an open area like this...there is no FLOW

A stained glass light add great color and beauty.

Your decor seems to be cottage or maybe country, a punched tin fixture would make it more so. My suggestion would be to do something casual like this.

I love the idea of a drum shade. Its simple so it won't detract from everything else in the room.

Remember that your glass table will reflect the bottom of the fixture. I'd avoid anything that has bare bulbs.

West Elm has a drum shade light with a diffuser on the bottom so you wouldn't have the light reflection problem on the table.

Costco has a beautiful white drum with a few crystals right now at a good price. I agree with judyg a drum would with go with your table and chairs.

Your decor is quite traditional except for your table and chairs. They fit in the space okay as they are fairly neutral in style, but if you add a modern light fixture, you will have a pocket of modern in a traditional room that might look out of place. The existing fixture works well, but if you must change it, stick to a more traditional style.

I'd lower the height of the replacement light perhaps an additional 6". A round shape in a more contemporary style would look best with what is a fairly modern table/chairs set. The use of clear glass with decorative clear bulbs will complete the picture.
