It depends on the sunlight if you will notice when a male is perched and they have a full gorget when they turn their head it will change from a red to dark . The young males will have a patchy area under their neck it will look like a bunch of black dots. Young males gorgets wont be fully red till they go south and then return in the spring. Although on some young males before they leave you might see a dot or small patch of red, but not a full gorget, not this year. Any full throated gorgets you see this year are adult males at least a full year old.

Here is an example of what I was trying to tell you. Notice all dots or patchy looking area on the neck/throat. This is a young male and will eventually lose the white tips on the tail feathers that usually only the adult female has. Look at the intensity on that face.
