Take Ellery's advice, masondad. Now is the perfect time to put out a hummingbird feeder. You'll see more hummingbirds over the next few weeks than you will next spring, and the birds that take advantage of your feeder this year will remember it and return next year. Feeders can help the birds meet their extreme energy demands during fall migration, especially if natural nectar is in short supply. You could plant something like cardinal flower or 'Lady in Red' salvias right now to add some additional attraction to your yard, but now's also a good time to think about what hummingbird-attracting shrubs and perennials to plant this fall for seasons to come. Enjoy!

Hello and welcome to this forum! You don't need ANY flowers around to attract hummies (even though they like them). All you need to put out is your feeder. If you want them to come back again next season and remember your house put it out NOW.

We don't have any flowers around this year because we just moved into our house a couple of months ago and we are still settling in. However we have already attracted Hummie's to our yard with just a few feeders up.

It has been soooo hot this summer just remember to change your nectar every couple of days or it will spoil and it can harm your Hummies. The nectar should be 1/4 cup sugar to every 1 cup water. Enjoy your new hobby!

hi masondad, welcome. I have my main feeder on the south side of the house, under an awning, in full sun. go for it. change your clear, homemade nectar every 2-3 days consistently, and your birds will be healthy and happy to come back. keep us posted on the visitors you get.

Mansondad I am a day late and a dollar short but WELCOME to the forum. I can't add anyother advise here so after you have hung that feeder just sit back and enjoy watching for the hummingbirds.

nope, did not get it up last night....figured putting it on the overhang would not allow easy access to maintain it. I need to get a pole to put it on. Thanks for all the advice....this will be a great site to come and learn (and see some COOL pictures.

Just wanted to add something. I hang my feeders on the overhang of the house, but like you mentioned - they're kinda high to maintain. So, what I did was bought some of those neat ol "S" hooks (that are long) that you can buy at any birding store (or even from Lowes in the flower pot/accessory area). I have about 2 or 3 S hooks linked on each other to bring the level of the feeder down to my level so that I can easily hang it (plus easier to view at eye level). They're attached to one of those round thingies, sorry don't know the name, but it's a round metal with a screw at the end that you can just screw into the wood (the ones that you put hanging potted plants on).

I just put my feeder out today. I can expect visitors with the next few days when the Cherry Tree starts blooming :D
