NO!! & NO!! Do not use it. Take and mix 4 parts water with 1 part sugar. That's all you need to do.

no, throw that stuff out and save your money and bird's health by not buying any more. mix 1 part (pure granulated cane) sugar to 4 parts water. don't bother with red color, leave it clear. they love that the best.

Thank you for such a quick response! I've thrown the stuff away. I'll use what has been suggested. Can I use plain tap water? Also, does it matter if the feeder is in sun or shade?

I use tap water becasue I live in the country and have a very deep well. Some use bottled water. I think shade is best but I have mine hanging in sun because I only have three trees in my yard.

dereks: Hanging in the sun is fine, but you'll probably have to replace the sugar water on a more frequent basis than if it were in a shady location. (High temperatures also shortens the time between cleanings!)
