Well, I planted crepe myrtles(5) in my yard simply because I love them, not knowing it would attract wildlife. This is the first year they have really bloomed heavily, they have been established for about 4 years now. I have always had butterflies and dragonflies feeding, but never had a hummingbird until this summer. Just today I saw 4 hummers all in the crepe myrtles. I think I will put some more feeders up as well. That is all my father does and he has about 20 hummers at his house.

I love crepe myrtles and have 3 very large ones, but was under the impression the hummers weren't interested in them. I'm going to pay closer attention to that part of the yard. If the hummers do indeed like them, I'll plant more.

Thanks for the input. I was just a little surprised that I never see hummers eating from the blooms, so was just wondering. Maybe to many bees on it? Oh well thanks again, J

I have never seen bees, butterflies or hummingbirds pay any attention to any of my crape myrtles. Birds eat the seeds and that is about it.

Crepe Myrtles evolved in Asia, where there are no hummingbirds. Most of our native tubular flowers evolved for hummingbird pollination. Hummingbirds also chase and eat insects. The hummingbirds that were seen around the Crepe Myrtles were probably chasing the many insects attracted to them.

Crape myrtle flowers have no nectar.

Hummingbirds don't require tubular flowers, but a lot of our native tubular flowers evolved that way specifically for hummingbird pollination. Their sticky tongues get more nectar from tubular flowers than flat ones. They also visit many flowers for the small insects they attract. But any flower rich in nectar is fair game.

I have a big crape myrtle near my front door. I have one feeder hanging from the tree and various other feeders in the area. The hummers love to perch in the crape myrtle. I think they like the spacing of the branches. I've never seen them go near the blooms.

I think carol is probably right...I never saw hummers in mine either.

This is an old post, but hummers love my crepe myrtle here in austin. its a white flowering one too, surprising it attracted them.
