hi, D, welcome. is anyone here growing that one? I've never heard of it either, so I searched it. link below. it sure looks like it could be a good hummingbird flower. it is native to australia and hummers are native to the americas. the adults might not recognize it, but I bet you could get a juvenile to try it. it might make a good experiment. is it available in nurseries there? I've never seen it. keep us posted.

Bob, thanks for that list, and the welcome! I actually have several good hummer plants already. They are mad for my 2 b&b, and I have a couple of salvia greggi, and some bat faced cuphea, as well as some pentas, etc. The Kangaroo Paw is just so exotic looking, I thought it would look good on my porch. But I have limited space on the porch, so I'm trying to keep the porch for plants the little guys definitely like.

I'm told that the hummers actually love a number of the Australian plants, such as the red flowered grevilleas, and the Anigozanthos such as kangaroo paw. However, I have put in several plants the hummers reputedly love, and spend my time watching the hummers ignore them on the way to the feeder! :)

As for the Kangaroo paw, and other anigozanthos, they are indeed carried by nurseries here. We've got the climate for the australians, I guess. In fact, Lowe's is carrying the Kangaroo paw.

Hi DGirl..welcome to the forum! I work for a florist for the USN/ and we purchase the cut Kangaroo paws for arrangements. I always have to buy a few to bring home as they are so unique in their design. Will be interested to see how they grow for you - lucky you - from Lowe's no less!!

Welcome DGirlLA, I never heard of kangaroo paws but when I get a chance to look around the Philadelphia flower show in March they are usually selling some wild looking tropical plants that hummers have been known to use, shrimp plant looks like a shrimp and the hummers love it. lipstick plant another they love then the candy corn plant which they also love and it grows into a monster but stopped blooming and something that we can usually buy at the garden centers and supermarkets some years cigar plant and bat ears plant which really looks alot more like mickey mouse's ears than a bat's. These are all crazy tropicals they like too. Sarah

I can confirm that hummingbirds love kangaroo paws. I have several planted and the hummers do not leave them alone for long!

You can try the seed exchange forum or you can order Anigosanthos from www.jlhudsonseeds.net. I once found the plants at our local grocery store but they did not last long here. Helena

I have had several differnt colors of kangaroo paw. I orginally bought them at Home Dept in gallon size. The best growers are the yellows and reds, for me. The hummingbirds go to them readily. I don't see them as a great food source though, the blooms last a long time but they take a long time to produce new bloom and there seems to be a season of bloom. I like them and think they are an interesting and pretty plant but I just would not select one for it's ability to feed the hummers. :-)
