i was thinking .... you water them when they need water .. and then very deeply ...

you figure all that out by inserting your finger.... and finding out when it is getting dry ...

how long to water... as long as it takes to get 8 to 12 inches down ...

you find that out.. by digging a hole in the same bed.. and finding out how long it takes for the sprinkler.. in your soil.. to get water down to where the roots are..

watering is an art .. not a science.. so there is no 'scientific scheduling' ...

there are so many variables.. specific to your garden.. that only you can really figure it all out

on my drip irrigation.. each zone gets 6 to 8 hours.. emitter tape at 12 inch spacing .. [.25] gal/hr .... on pure yellow sand with very high drainage ...

and i probably use less water than a rain bird on for a couple hours ....

and i figured it all out by digging a lot of holes .... and while you have all those holes.. may as well fill them up with more hosta.. lol ...

ok, Ken, do you dig the holes AFTER you've watered a certain amount of time? Otherwise, don't the holes just start filling up with water right away? Just checking...

I dont have a drip irrigation. I need to see about some type of sprinkler system but dont have money for something very expensive. I usually water by hand due to only watering grass once a week for 45 minutes but I think my hostas might need more water than that. I might just do the tuna can test where I water plants 1-2 times a weeks and when the can fills up I know I have watered enough. This is what they recommend for your lawn on lawn forum. Why you are so angry? After ten years a lot of people still search how to water hostas in pots, on the sun, etc. And they don't find quality information. So I created an article for them and try to promote it here. But you flag me as a spammer, why? All I do is try to help people.

There is plenty of quality information on these forums and many, many very experienced members that share that information freely. Linking to a personal business - and that's exactly what a for-profit blog is - is prohibited by the terms and conditions of this website. That IS spamming.

If you want to help, fine, but linking to a long dissertation on the subject is not what most folks come here for. If that's what they are looking for, there are many recognized horticultural websites that can provide in-depth info.

And to be honest, some of the info you present in your linked blog posts is of dubious accuracy.

The key is "try to promote it here". That's called spam, no matter where you post it.

Sharing a link to your blog in an active thread would be one thing... link dropping a half dozen times in the course of an hour in threads that are all several years old is spammy.

Just google 'watering hostas' and you will find many 'recognized horticultural websites' that provide nothing and old houzz threads also there.

And ken's answer - the very first one on the thread - answered the question perfectly!! Absolutely no need to delve any further than that and certainly not through a long and involved blog article that contains any number of inaccuracies.
