Went to Home Depot this afternoon and there was a full 8" hanging EA pot of polyneura for $13.99, but the plastic pot was cracked. I have 2 tiny 2 node cuttings rooting so initialy my thought was to pass it up. Kept going back to it and finally asked the garden manager if it could be discounted due to the cracked pot. She said "Certainly! I hope you give it a good home." and slapped a $2.49 tag on it! Woo Hooo!

Next went to Weiss grocery store in the same plaza to get some hair stuff and stopped at their little plant area. First noticed a hanging variegated carnosa, but I already have 2 - one variegated exotica picta from eBay and a little solid green one with good new growth I picked up at Walmart this past week for less than 3 dollars. Upon closer inspection I noticed another EA 8" hanging basket of nummularioides for $12.99! Just love the fuzzy texture of the leaves!

I'm so excited! Looking forward to doing some exchanges in the future.

Can't believe how much time I spend on this site lurking - will be searching tonight to see which of the varieties I have can take the shade of a northern window!

    Hey Kelly
I know there is a lacunosa in a 6" pot in ebay right now for only $7.99, it's really pretty it lookes like the one I bought at lowes last week. I am not real sure about bugs either, but was wondering b/c I got all those cuttings off of ebay but nothing so far, thank goodness. I didn't realize you could spray them with alcohol, cool. I would like to have a nummularioides, I saw one on ebay (a full grown plant but with shipping and all it was starting out around $40 bucks. But I really would like to have all those blooms like Jan's plant on saw on here in the "So many blooms".

you had mentioned you are a recent hoya collector, which ones do you have? I wanted to take pic's last night or this morning so i could put them on here but had other stuff occupy my time as usual. I will hopefully have time tomorrow.

Shanna, nummularioides IS a slow grower, plus you have to figure in the time it will take for cuttings to root - the one good thing is that even very small plants and just rooted cuttings will bloom for you.

But, if you want a big plant, keep an eye out for the Exotic Angel nummularioides - I can't remember what they call it, but they sell it and I just saw a few in my local Lowes so they are around right now. They do seem a little different than my nummularioides, which came from a now out of business grower - mine is bushy and kind of stiff growing, whereas the EA one is more viney and flexible, if that makes sense. I don't think there is a difference in the flowers, though. I have a cutting from an EA one about to bloom, but I am sure it will be the same. Now there is another nummularioides out there with yellow instead of pink centers, I haven't been able to find anyone to sell or trade me a cutting of that one yet.

But it is always nice to get the bigger plants if you can, especially because some hoyas grow sooo slowly.

There is also that nummularioides that I received a while back - I think it was labeled DK-2. It definitely is a "slowish" grower, and I haven't seen blooms yet. I wonder if the blooms will look the same as the "typical" nummularioides or if they will be yellow. I'll just have to wait and *hopefully* see!

    Ines
good to hear that the small cuttings will bloom but I guess I am greedy, I prefer a big plant. I am not sure either what they call the nummularioides in the EA plants. I am always going to lowes and I saw a fishtail there last week in an 8" pot maybe for 15.00. I reconized it but couldn't remember what the bloom looked like so I just passed it up, since I had another hoya in my hand already. I think I may go to lowe's on my lunch break today b/c I think they get plant shipments in on mondays. Even if they don't I enjoy looking but I haven't bought anything but hoyas in the last 3 months or so.

If you find out what the EA name is will you let me know? I appreciate it. I really like the leaves of the nummularioides. There was also a small leaved EA hoya I thought the tag said. I will look if it's still there, hadn't seen it before on the internet while doing the many serches for hoya plants.

I agree, some hoyas are very slow. But it is so exciting to see a leaf/bloom grow. I have 2 leaves growing right now on my verigated crimson (i think) and I inspect it and the others daily.

    Gabi
make sure you let us know what color your blooms are as ines said above, could be yellow or pink centers. What do you mean labeled DK-2?, I guess I am not familiar with that.

    Shanna,

I just took a look at PG's EA hoya list thread, and Ines wrote a post saying that EA is calling nummularioides
"Hoya Carnosa Green Leaf" - so I hope you'll now be able to find an EA nummularioides! I've seen a lot of them lately.

    Here's some info on DK-2:
It is very similar to Hoya nummularioides but has a lot of reddish color. The leaves are also pubescent ("fuzzy") like H. nummularioides. It doesn't drop its peduncles after flowering like H. nummularioides does, it has more flowers per umbel, the blooms last longer, there are 2 peduncles/umbles per node, and the leaves are larger than H. nummularioides.
If you'd like to see a picture of it (from when I first got it), go to the link I attached on the bottom of this post and scroll down to my second post on it (the 9th post) - also read Ines' post, which is right after mine....she adds a bit of information on DK-2. I have to say...after looking at the picture I posted in that thread, mine has actually grown quite a bit since then - so it might be a fast grower after all!

It will be very interesting to see the 2 numm. bloom. Cant wait to see pics. I did not know there was two types of numm. I have the regular one with the dark green leaves, and I really like it. I like the smaller leaf hoyas, and seeing the numm. with the red makes me want that one too!!

    Gabi
Thanks for the EA translation-I have not seen it yet but I will look for it b/c I would like to get one. Also thanks for the info on the Numm, sounds like the leave on the DK-2 are pretty with the red and your pic proved to be true. So how long have you had your Numm? And you said it hasn't bloomed yet, right?

I had seen an EA at lowes and it was called "stripes" which is a Curtisii. After reading about it at myhoyas.com decided I was glad I didn't get it. Plus it wasn't in the best shape b/c of overwatering and being shoved up next to another hanging basket. Also there was a fishtail but it was only a couple yellow leaves and decided since I am bidding on 2 on ebay I should pass.

I have to ask....I am in Canada, so we have Home Depot, Rona, Walmart, What is Lowes connected to? Does anyone know? I have only seen EA plants at Walmart here.

    Thanks

    Shanna,
I probably got my DK-2 around the same time that I posted that pic (around May of this year). I'll try to take a picture of what it looks like now when I get home. No, it hasn't bloomed yet.

The first time I tried curtissi (a small pot ordered from Ebay), I failed miserably! I gave it another go though, and I'm glad I did. This Spring I bought an EA curtissii, and it's been doing great. I find that taking the bottom saucer off of EA plants is VERY helpful, because otherwise it takes way too long for the soil to dry out. Curtissii likes to stay pretty dry, so I water it very infrequently. So far, so good! If you ever find a healthy-ish looking one, it might be worth a try (if you like it, that is).

    Nova,
I'm not sure what you mean in your question (about what Lowes is "connected" to), but Lowes is just another big box store like Home Depot.

    Gabi

    Nova
That's funny that you have only seen EA plants at Walmart b/c I look at walmart here in Missouri and the only EA plants I find are at Lowes and the home depo closest to me is about 30 miles away, one in each direction which is not far but just haven't been to either place in a while.

Wait, I will correct myself, I saw some EA plants at Walmart once.....lol, never anywhere else, and I check all the time. I constantly check Walmart and I have never seen them get another shipment, and this way back in June. I took a little peek at Lowe's website, they aren't affiliated with anyone else, I thought maybe they go by "?????" in Canada or something, but I guess not.

    Shanna-
    I have:
    H. Carnosa "picta" exotica (variegated)
    H. Carnosa - solid green (Walmart)
    H. Diptera...have two, but the leaves are different
    H. Loheri
    H. Ariadna
    H. DS-70
    H. Australis
    H. cv Iris Marie
    H. Fungii
    H. Publicalyx "Bright One"
    H. Minibelle
    H. Bella Variegated
    H. Nummulariodes- 2 of these, one EA, one rooted cutting that's less "fuzzy" then the EA
    H. Cummingiana
    H. Kentiana
    H. Kerrii - Reverse Variegation
    H. Callistophylla cutting
    H. Meredithii cutting
    H. Obscura
    H. Wayetti cutting
    H. Shepherdii cutting
    H. Globulosa cutting
    H. Finlaysonii cutting
    H. Polyneura - 2- one EA (Home Depot...my $2.49 purchase!, one rooted cutting of the EA (the vine was broken)
    H. Brevialata - EA (Lowe's)

Most are rooted cuttings or small plants.
    I need more!

    Hills -
Great picture of the horrible little creature! What plant is that?
The things I think were scales had no tail things on them. Didn't see the black fly/gnat this evening, although oddly there have been these little black things on the sheer drapes every evening. Initially I thought it was soil being blown out when I mist the plants, but made sure there was none there this morning when I left and sure enough there were some again this evening! When I clean it up it really does just seem like soil although it's all shaped exactly the same - little oblong dark brown or black spec - doesn't move which are apparently attrated to natural light.

Forgot 2 hoya's - Serpens and Retusa! My first hoya eBay purchases!

The picture is of my imperialis var 'rauschii', which is thinking about growing, but isn't sure (very confused plant!) You can see my multiflora/javanica/cyroteracus floribindum on the left and the carnosa on the right trying to get into the back of the picture...
I think the 'tail' you refer to is in fact the little feeler things that mealies have on their 'heads'- the mealie is heading down the plant. Before it got exterminated (hee hee).
I've had no problems with my curtisii - it's growing, and looking nice and healthy. I want to pot it up into a coconut when I get the chance.
Here, one of our supermarkets - Asda - was bought out by Walmart. Sadly, still no hoyas for sale though. Although this might be a good thing for me, as I'm currently on a very strict budget!

    kelly
oh my goodness you have 30 hoyas???!!!! that's awsome. I can't believe you have so many. hey, I have an idea for you... Remember me telling you I bid on a Lacunosa in a 6" pot on ebay? Well if I end up getting it, I already have one. Would you be interested in trading me some cuttings for the Lacunosa? I thought I remembered you saying you'd like to have one. Let me know what you think.

Do you have any other house plants besides hoya's? I have around 35 plants total I think and some are very big. I had 3 schefflera's, 2 verig. and 1 not and combined them all into a 15" pot to find more room for my hoyas, and the scheffleras look so much better. Same with my lucky bamboo, some I got in Florida on vacation. I did take pictures last night and thought I put the camera in the car and realized when I got to work I must have left it in the garage or kitchen at home, bummer, but I did get the cord that attaches the camera and computer, will not do me much good today. I do have a plant (not hoya) I want to see if you or someone here can identify if not I can put it on the house plant forum. I got it about 6 years ago when I was a junior in Highschool and don't really know what it is. I will try to post my pic's tomorrow. I hope I took the pictures right with the lighting so they will show up ok, there are a few I would like to have help identifying including some hoyas.

    Shanna-

I would love to do trades eventually, unfortunately all but my EA purchases are much too small to take cuttings from yet. Maybe in the spring though!

    kelly
ok that sounds good, most of mine are pretty small too. I will try to post my pics on here in a bit.

    Hey kelly
Here are some pics of my hoyas.

I am sorry the pic's look like there going to be big but I don't know if I figured out how to resize them properly.
    Shanna

    And another.
    EA Lacunosa

Tried resizing picture again probably won't work.

Shanna, nice hoyas! In the group pic you posted, what is the hoya in the top left corner, it looks like a mini KQ, but it is so little, it is really pretty. I love you lacunosa, the leaves on mine aren't such a nice deep green, where abouts is yours hanging from, what kind of light does it get??

    Nova
Thank you. 5th pic? I am not positive what it is, that is a cutting I got from my friend about a year ago. When hers bloomed it was pink with a dark center (burgendy??) Obivously I will be waiting a long time for that one to bloom. The friend that gave me the cutting had hers for 7 years before it bloomed and she didn't know what it was and didn't realize it was suppose to bloom, when she recieved it, it was a cutting.

I got the lacunosa at Lowes for $10, I was happy, plus it was in bloom. I accidently bid on another one on ebay, wasn't really wanting two of them but I guess if I win the bid I will indeed have 2.

I am hanging my plants from a stud in the wall. I bought 15" wall hangers so the plants wouldn't touch the wall, (they have shorter hangers, i.e. 8", 10", 12"), absolutely LOVE the hangers and the whole idea of hanging them up.

1st & 5th pics are in east windows. All others in South. And the lacunosa is hanging from the bottom of a macramae with another plant in it.

    Heartshaped hoya

    Another from Lowes.

I wanted to attach a pic of my puppy gretchen (full-size doberman). She is about 7 months old now but the pic was taken last month.

Aww, she's cute.....I have a pitbull rotty cross, and she is a big teddy bear. Gotta love our pets! My lacunosa is in an east window, but it had terrible accident a few months ago, and beat it up pretty bad, so it is starting to finally look half decent. I hope someone can identify your little hoya there, it is really dainty and petite and oh so pretty!

I am thinking that hoya could be hoya holliana, but I dont know for sure, so maybe someone else can confirm. I thought holliana was a mini carnosa cultivar that resembled KQ......but hopefully someone else can confirm.....thanks

hey nova12, i think the hoya is called hollianna, i dont know where in canada you are located, but theres a place in ontario that has nice 4" pots for ten dollars

Is this the one you were trying to identify?

    Love the Hoya Dog. :)

Your hoyas have a really great color especially the Kerri, looks dark green (might just be the lighting). Healthy plants!

    Susan

Thanks susan, yes the kerri is pretty dark. I hope to have 3 more hoyas on the way next week.

My dog is actually very good with my plants she just doesn't seem to interested in them, thank goodness.

My dog has no interest in my plants either, thank God, I had a puppy here a couple months ago and the little bugger started chewing on my floor plants. I could have shot him.....lol. He was lucky they werent poisonous.

Yes, that is the hoya in question, and I see that there is a second holliana vote. I am in Alberta, pretty far from Ontario, does the place ship? Although I am scared to ask what the shipping could be.

Nova, this is the one that I recieved from my friend (in the cream pot), sorry for the confusion.

it is unfortunate that they dont ship. you might be able to find holliana closer to you but if you cant then let me know.

Nova, I got mine on ebay from coyboyflowerman, could you check with him?

I can only have plants within the country shipped to me, as I am in Canada. To get anything into this country, it needs a phytocertificate, which is close to 60$, I got one last year for a plant, a brug, which promptly died. So it can get pretty expensive to get plants here. There are ways to get around it, I had a woman from Idaho send me a cutting of something (can't remember what) and she put it in a bubble envelope and marked photos-do not bend, and it got to me, but on the flip side, I also lost a plant at customs once because it was not marked properly, but it was larger, and yeah that never came, a letter came from customs instead....lol. And then never mind asking someone "hey, pstt, wanna smuggle a couple clippings across the border for me......please, pretty please" LOL. It doesn't work with everyone.

So I have to find these in Canada, I believe cowboyflowerman is based in the states as well. There a couple women in Canada on ebay that sell AV's and a few Kohleria, and I have gotten a few things from them, but I havent found a hoya seller in Canada yet, just the odd plant.

    Shanna,

Gorgeous hoyas! Thanks for sharing :)
I love your pots too! But you might eventually want to consider using those glazed ceramic pots as cache pots(maybe the next time you repot you can put the hoyas in a plastic pot, and then place the plastic pot inside the ceramic pot). I have found that hoyas like to be in plastic pots, and glazed ceramic keeps them too wet. But you have done some gorgeous potting jobs, and the hoyas look gorgeous in those pots!

    Gabi

    Shanna,

After looking at that plant (that was thought to be holliana...and very well could be), I just wanted to throw out there that it also looks like Hoya carnosa 'Marlea'.

    Gabi

Wow! Your hoya's are a nice size! Mine definitely look like babies in comparison.

I checked the pictures/descriptions cowboyflowerman has of the carnosa collection he sells...hopefully I've attached the link below. Both the Marlea and Holliana look delicate.

Even more than the hoya's I love the puppy picture! I have 2 senior mutts and 3 cats.

Here is a link that might be useful: Carnosa's

Shanna, great looking plants. That's hoya holliana, I have one that looks identical.

I've sent rooted plants to Canada before in a box with a note on the outside saying that the box contained plants in commercial potting soil and the plants got to their destination fine (a little more time than shipping in the states, but they were sent thru).

    Susan

    Gabi -
thanks, yes i should have put them in the plastic pots like you said but I guess i didn't know. thanks for the advice. Do you think I should repot them now or wait a while? I have had them about a month so didn't know if it would be to unstable to repot them again so soon or not??? I know I have a Marlea on that same table, isn't this one Marlea? I have the tags (with the names on them) in the pots with each plant but haven't learned all of them yet. I really like this plant, it is just so cute.

    Nova
hey, sorry didn't realize you could ship plants over the border, kinda silly but what can ya do.... Is the photocertificate for each plant individually or once a year?

    Kelly
yes i agree i thought my hoyas were a good size, I was impressed with cowboyflowerman which is who I got them from off of ebay. Yep, that's the link to the 8 pack of hoyas I got from him. Marlea and Holliana to me look delicate as well, I am almost to the point I need some kind of small support for several of that 8 pack of hoyas.

I have to say I don't know what I'd do without my puppy and I'm sure your like that with you animals too. I really like cats too but my husband doesn't.

    Jan
Thanks for the confirmation on the holliana identification and compliment on plants. I have a question for you, if I am using the photobucket website to put pictures on here, I am not sure how to size them so that they are not so big. Can you help with that?

I don't think Marlea/Holliana is delicate, the leaves are small but they are pretty thick and sturdy. Mine is still a young plant, I treat it like a carnosa, no problems so far. It really is cute.

I didn't know you could ship plants or cuttings over the border without a certificate either...unless of course you don't claim plant material on the customs label, then how would they know? And it is much cheaper to send TO canada than it is to send FROM canada. I do know of a few growers and places you can buy hoyas up there, though....just not sure where I have it written down, not the most organized person in the world here....

Ines, I agree, Let me correct myself, I think I meant to say cute instead of delicate. I think I said delicate b/c of the size of the plant and the leaves are somewhat small.
    shanna

I know of a few here in Canada, but it is too late in the year now to order cuttings or plants (we just got a bit of snow this morn *sniff* and its darn cold). There are at least three growers I have come across that are in Canada, so I have a few months to plan what to order....lol. The plants I have now will totally keep me busy through the winter. You do need a certificate for any plant material, except seeds. I just ordered some brugmansia seeds last week and they were shipped no problem to me.

If I knew the specifics of how a round robin worked, I might try and plant one for the spring. I have noticed quite a few members are in Canada. So Maybe.....

    Nova, thanks.

    Nova,

The Round Robin idea sounds like a great way to share cuttings with members from Canada. I'm sure there are quite a few members on here that would participate in the Spring. Glad you mentioned it, because I think you will have a lot of fun doing it.

    Here's what you do:
You start off the box by putting in a bunch of cuttings in (the one I just participated in started off with about 20 cuttings, but you can put in 10 - I don't think it matters too much). Then you send the package to the next person on the RR list, and when they get the package they can take out as many cuttings as they want, but they have to replace the cuttings they took with other cuttings (so if they took out 7, they have to put 7 new ones in - no duplicates should be in the box, but that's up to the "rulemaker"!). That person then sends the package to the next person, and so on until it gets back to the person who started it. The way we packaged the cuttings seemed to keep them doing well (for the most part), and if a cutting or more had to be taken out because it was rotted or on its way out, the person who found it would either throw it out or try to revive it. We also had some people throw in "extras" if they had some available, just in case some cuttings went bad. If people try and re-mail the box out within a day or so, and if the cuttings are frequently refreshed, then they should do fine. I hope I explained it well! Have fun if you decide to do it :)

    Gabi

Thank you so much Gabro, I really have been thinking about doing it, it sounds like a really great way to share your hoyas, and I really do think I could find enough people in Canada to do it. I will be saving your post.....so I can make sure I get it right in the spring. I will totally be hanging around for a while to get to know everyone. I dont have any fellow plant collector friends, so finding this forum has been a nice change.
